Nan S:
Very impressive website, however some bibles are “conspicuous by their absence” in the same way that Good Conduct medals are conspicuous if missing from a military man’s shirt.

These missing bibles are (all Catholic - lol):
The New American Bible (which is very different from the New American Standard Bible)
The Jerusalem Bible
The New Jerusalem Bible
The Revised Standard Version
The Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition
The Good News Bible - Catholic Edition

Missing from the Commentaries are (Catholic again - imagine that!):
The Dictionary of the Bible
The New Jerome Biblical Commentary
Yes, it is a Protestant site lol… One of the reasons those aren’t there is also that they are copyrighted. That’s why the NIV and NKJV and NLT aren’t there either.

It’s a very useful program. I have it running at all times, so whenever I am on the forums and need a quote, or to read the context of a verse, or whenver somebody calls me on the phone and mentions a verse or something, it takes me less than 10 seconds to find it in any version that’s on there and do whatever I want with it.

It is also useful because all of the versions w/ Strong’s numbers have a feature where you can hold your mouse over the word and it shows the Strong’s definition in a tooltip. If you double click on the number, it navigates the dictionary to that word, and you can look it up in any of the dictionaries. Also, all the features are onscreen at once (Bible, Dictionary, Commentary, whatever else) so you don’t need to navigate around to get them.

lol I have been reading that lately it is simply great and will come in very useful for a friend of mine 🙂

I found this great Bible at a FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) conference. It breaks up the Bible into pieces so you can read a piece every day from both the NT and OT and have the whole thing read in a year. I think they have different versions of it, but I naturally got the Catholic version. I love it because I’m the kind of person who picks up a Bible and goes, “Okay, now what?” :ehh: and then I go straight to Matthew (for the billionth time) because he’s my favorite.

I can’t remember what it’s called though, which makes me a big help! 👍

But I can also say to beware of the NASB because that’s what they were promoting on the Protestant website all us Catholics got kicked off of. (There’s a thread in Apologetics if you care to read it, I think it’s titled “Baptists.com/Catholics banned” or something similar.)

And no harm in reading the KJV, just know that it isn’t Catholic so if something doesn’t sound kosher…

I could have sworn I read somewhere that the reason why the NIV came about is because in the '60’s Protestants took a look at the KJV and noted over 30,000 mistakes. I tried to look it up & of course, now I cannot find it.
Here’s a great place to start

Just a quick thanks to all those who have taken time to be in discussion with me… it’s much appreciated.

Can someone tell me… is there a specific Bible version I should be using? I have a King James… is that cool?
Jimmy, I own a KJV myself. But I only use it for debating with protestants. I have 4 other Catholic bibles.

It seems to me that the KJV is actually an insult to the Catholic church. King James and his gang (The James Gang) :0 , went and used ancient Hebrew Scripts for the Old Testament, instead of the Septuagint, which the Catholic Bible is based on. Also the KJV you probably have is missing 7 books. In other words you are missing out on 7 other books, of the Word of God.

Also there other subtle Anti-Catholic translations taking place in the KJV new testament. For instance it will often use the phrase He begat, instead of “father”, and a number of other subtle changes like that.

In a word I would be very careful about using a KJV, if you don’t know the fundamental differences between KJV and the Catholic editions. Also if you buy the NAB catholic version, then make sure it is the version authorized by the Holy See. Because between the mid 1970’s, or 80’s up until recently, there was some editing done that was never authorized by the Holy See, and won’t be. But I think the newer NAB versions are authorized by the Holy See.
