Hi. I am Catholic and want to read and study the Bible. I recently purchased a Bible, It is NIV (New International Version)/The Message. Parallel Bible. My question being is this the right bible for me as a catholic? If not which one should I get. Thank you

Unfortunately, the NIV does contain a bit of a bias in it’s interpretation and The Message is a paraphrase of Scripture. Also, these translations wouldn’t typically include the deuterocanonical books. I wouldn’t toss out the NIV altogether, but I would encourage you to read it along with a Catholic translation such as Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition (RSV-CE) or the Douay-Rheims. 🙂

For the time being, you can probably get good use out of the money you spent. Read it, and get a good feel for it. I have a Zondervan NIV Study Bible. It is very nice and easy to read.

When you have your feet on the ground, the other advice will serve you well. I also have a Douay Rhiems and a Jerusalem Bible. But no need to rush out and spend your money at this point. Use what you have to get started and get a good feel for the Bible. You probably won’t be getting into the books that the protestants clipped out anytime soon.

Its always best to start a new endeavour learning correct fundamentals and forming a solid foundation on which to grow your skills and knowledge. This is true for scripture study as it is for anything else you do.

I would recommend getting a good Catholic bible right away. I personally would recommend any of the RSVCE editions currently available. You can get one off many various web sites (such as Ebay, Half.com or Amazon.com) for under $10, so money really shouldn’t be an issue. The NIV is really not a translation that is true to your Catholic faith.

In addition, study your bible with the Catechism by your side. In fact, if you have a “big green” version of the Catechism, you can cross-reference all the scripture quotations in the Catechism using an appendix near the back of it.

Finally, it might not actually take you long at all to be looking for the deuterocanonical books that are not included in protestant bibles. Many fundamental Church teachings are supported by passages in these books.

Do you mind providing a link to that site? I just tried going there and neither Yahoo or Google could find it. I’m always interested in sites like this and I haven’t heard of this one before. 🙂
