is it just me ,or does it seem that when ever we give biblical evidance of something for fundamentals they say that it does mean that or its symbolic. example : eucharist, baptism, authority? what do you think.

It has always been curious to me that many of those who insist on a literal interpretation of the Bible often will say that “This is my body” should not be literally interpreted.

In fundamentalist land everyone but catholics and the pope are popes. They forget that the Church is the pillar and foundation of Truth not the operator’s manual.(Or rather PART of the operator’s manual)😉

Also it’s funny that they take every part of the bible literally except the CATHOLIC parts.I’m being facetious-every word of it’s Catholic as it was written and compiled by the Catholic Church.(How’s that for Catholic Triumphalism)

I agree with you. Regardless of topic, theology or issue, when it supports the Catholic position it is not to be taken literally. But when it is juxta-positioned by the Catholic position then it IS to be taken literally and we are wrong!

In a nutshell: Heads we lose and tails we can’t win!

That’s the way it is friend. I have learned to ‘put up and shut up’! All we can do is to pray for those who wish us ill, love them and do them good if we can and be firmly committed not to do them any harm. That after all is what our Catholic faith and Church demands of us! To do that is to do Catholic! 🙂

Blessings and peace

There are those of them that say “anyone can interpret the Bible”. Note that they use the word “anyone”…its an all inclusive word. It means “all people, everybody, every last one on earth”. But yet, I have had them tell me… Catholics can’t. Hmmm, go figure. Also, they can be pretty adamant about the anybody thing…but when hit with the question: Can illiterate unschooled people or mentally retarded people “interpret the Bible”… Well, you just never get an answer, go figure.

I see the problem as this: Most have no real concept of free will. Some are but a step away from junior islamics “educated” in madrassas…lots of memorizing of snippets…little actual understanding of actual context, lots of misinterpretation, and over emphasis on most things other than what Christ Himself said… For example: Repetitive redundancy in quoting Paul, as in Paul this, Paul that, …etc. Almost as if no-one else authored a book in the Bible.

Bottom line… If they even dare to begin to agree, the paper and stick walls of their Jericho will tumble down around them, and their “justification” for existence will vanish with the wind.

We have to be prepared for this; to expect it to happen.

That means we have to have a reason that addresses why we take certain passages literally, and do it without attacking them.

It might be wise to respond with something like this:

“I don’t believe this just because my Church tells me to. I have read it for myself, and I agree with my Church. Let me tell you why.”

Keep charity in mind at all times!
