Hi there. So recently, I watched a few episodes of Biblical Mysteries Explained - yourdiscovery.com/web/shows/biblical-mysteries-explained/
And it brought up some questions:
-Do you believe that science and religion go hand in hand? They proved that the first 6 stages of the 10 plagues could go hand in hand with each other…the water turning red is a natural phenomenon which would lead to frogs leaving the ocean, etc. They even had explanations for the first borns dying.
-They mentioned how asteroids were the reason Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed…so wouldn’t that mean Lot and his family would have been killed, too? It said everyone in the area would have had to have been killed.

I watched one show on this same channel called the Lost Gospels, and it talked about the gospel of Thomas, Peter, Mary Magdalene, and even Judas. But, they ended up being forged and not actually by them. But they were talking about how the 4 gospels we have now were almost definitely NOT written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. What would this mean for the Christian religion?

Thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut! I’m excited to see what people have to say on these matters. 👍

As for the miracles I don’t think that natural phenomenon necessarily make them any less miraculous. For example with the star of Bethlehem, it is believed that the star was actually the planets aligning in such a way that it created that great bright star in the sky. That still doesn’t take away from the fact that that star is what led the wise men to the Christ Child. It was ordained by God. Same with the Egyptian plagues. Phenomenon or no phenomenon, these things were ordained by God as judgment against Egypt for the captivity of his chosen people.

As for the gospels… We know that the gospels of Thomas, Peter, Judas, etc. were written by the Gnostics. History will show us this (did they tell you that on the program?) but as for the true gospels not being written by the apostles, well… I would like to hear that argument. I am told that we have fragments of the gospel of John written in Greek that date back to the first century.

Dear always wondering,

Yes, with the Old Testament miracles, isn’t it funny that G-d always had something in mind when these “natural” happenings occurred? Very coincidental, wouldn’t you say? Notice they didn’t try to explain Christ’s miracles…it really is hard to change water into wine, with witnesses, and to raise someone from the dead, with witnesses.

Most of the junk you will see on the Discovery channels (don’t they have a bunch, like also the History Channel?) about religion is bunk. It is simply some nut’s opinion. Haven’t you seen the “documented” evidence that aliens colonized the earth?

When you watch those programs, flip over to the Sci-Fi Channel every once in awhile, and make comparisons. Though not as controversial and gaudy as Discovery/History, at least they have a story line in Sci-Fi that plays out.

Stick to the Bible for stories. If you run out of those, there is an internet site called AmericanCatholic that has a new Saint of the Day every day. As a protestant, they may not be your cup of tea, but at least they are true.

Peace.

Please be very careful about believing what you see on the History/Discovery channels on Cable TV. Their sensationalized scholorship is highly suspect and they aim to attract and stun an ill educated mass audience, especially when religion or religious beliefs are the subject. You would do much better to either read an approved Catholic Bible commentary, or watch historical programs on EWTN or the Catholic Channel. At least these sources offer un-impeachable historical scholarship.

I watched them to. I suggest doing what I did, quit watching those.

But why? I’m being as open-minded as I possibly can be. I was LDS for about a year and a half, and I went by faith and not logic or facts. And that obviously didn’t end up very well. I refused after that to go by anything, even something I’ve known forever, by just faith and hope. I’m being as open minded and as logical and factual, and backing it up with scientific evidence.

The reason is because these shows all start with the showing that the events in the Bible happened, but over the course of the show really try to disprove the Hand of God in them. They appear to me to be nothing more than a secular/atheistic attack to say “Yes, that happened but it was nothing more than a natural happening.”
I have watched the several of them and It hit me when they were explaining the parting of the Red Sea being caused be a earth Quake in the meditearainan sea and such that these things have happened since then as well without the Red sea parting.
These show are aimed at those with no faith aor weak faith to keep them that way.
