So, in a conversation with my betrothed regarding the 3 days of darkness, we stated discussing the Rapture, and the Biblical nature of the idea of the Rapture.
I googled “Biblical References to the Rapture”, and came up with this site: What is the Rapture?. As I have gone through the Bible verses, I see how the idea of the Rapture can be inferred, but I also see how the idea of the dead and the live are taken to Heaven for Judgement.

Please help me understand the Biblical references to the Rapture, and why you believe in this idea.

A good study of this question (from a Catholic perspective) can be found in this CA tract.

The Church has never taught definitively about the whole pre/mid/post-Tribulation controversy, nor the Post/a/Premillennialism controversy. It is unlikely that this knowledge is part of the Deposit of Faith, which precludes the Church from EVER settling these questions.

But the Church has authoritatively (but not definitively) taught that premillennialism cannot “safely be taught.” The premillennialist viewpoint is the foundation of the “rapture” ideas of most modern protestants.

As the CA tract says, most Catholics are simply uninterested in this end-times stuff. It is a big deal to many protestants (who are convinced that the last days are upon us - which is nothing new; see Heb 1:2). If you believe (as I do) that humanity has tens of thousands of years left, then you suddenly become very uninterested in Last Days prophecies. What makes us think we’re gonna get it right, anyway? The Jews had all those prophecies about their own Messiah, and when he finally came, they handed him over to be crucified. I tend to think that prophecy is best viewed in hindsight.

The concept of “the Rapture” didn’t exist prior to the 19th century. It gained momentum in the 1960s and/or 70’s through the famous Hal Lindsey book, The Late Great Planet Earth. Then the Left Behind movies and books came out and interest grew some more.

As for myself… I don’t put much stock in cultish type fear-based religious garbage. I leave that to the fiction writers and Hollywood. 😉

The only biblical reference to the so-called rapture is in 1 Thessalonians. And even that’s a stretch. There’s nothing in the book of Revelation about a rapture. Those who adhere to a “rapture” theology are not deriving such understanding from the Bible alone.

Here’s some good teaching on this.
A friend of mine has been reading the “Left Behind” books that have all of this stuff about the “Rapture” in them…is there really going to be a “Rapture” like these books talk about?
A friend of mine has been reading the “Left Behind” books that have all of this stuff about the “Rapture” in them…is there really going to be a “Rapture” like these books talk about? No, there’s not. The “Rapture” refers to a passage in First Thessalonians, chapter 4, which talks about Christians being “caught up” in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Many Christians believe, and the “Left Behind” books promote, that this being “caught up” to meet the Lord will occur before the Great Tribulation which is headed our way in the near future. Christians will simply vanish, meet Jesus somewhere in the air, and then return with Him to Heaven to await the end of time But notice, in verse 17, Paul says that “…we who are alive, who are left,” shall be caught up. Remember that…those who are “left” get caught up to meet the Lord.
The “Left Behind” books get their name from a passage in Luke 17 and a similar passage in Matthew 24 which talk about the coming of the Lord being like the days of Noah and the days of Lot. Matthew 24 puts it this way: “As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of man…they ate, they drank, they married and they did not know until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of man. Then two men will be in the field, one is taken and one is left. Two women grinding at the mill, one is taken one is left.”
“See,” Rapture enthusiasts say, “One is taken, one is left…the Rapture! Jesus takes the Christians and leaves behind non-Christians!” Two problems with that interpretation: First, Jesus’ coming is being compared to the days of Noah and the days of Lot. After the flood, who was left? Noah and his family…the good guys…the bad guys were taken! After Sodom and Gomorrah went up in smoke, who was left? Lot and his daughters…the good guys…the bad guys were taken! Second, remember 1 Thessalonians? It says that those who are “left” get to meet Jesus in the air. The good guys are left behind to meet Jesus.
In other words, you want to be left behind so that you can get caught up in the clouds to meet Jesus in the air and accompany Him back to earth at His 2nd and final coming. There will be no Rapture like the one the Left Behind books talk about…that view is not scriptural.

The Rapture and the Bible
What will really happen on "The Last Day"

In the case of Noah, God warned him of the coming wrath and God saved Noah and his family by instructing them to build an ark. And the Hand of God closed up the door. Those who did not heed the warnings, who were left behind outside, were all destroyed.

In the case of Sodom, God warned Abraham of the coming wrath in order to have Lot and his family saved. Angels were sent to help them escape the punishment of stoning of brimstone and fire. All who did not heed God’s law and made a mockery of Him with their pride, who were left behind in the city, were all destroyed. Lot’s wife, however, before she was taken to safety, looked back and was turned to salt.

those who looked to God, depended on God to save them from His Wrath, were taken into safety. Those who refused to look to God, to depend on Him Alone ,to heed the warnings quite clearly Written , suffered a “tribulation”. They suffered because they were left behind. Lot’s wife is a picture of those who are left behind( for she had not yet been taken into safety) and chose to look back to the Evil ;i.e. to take the mark of anti-christ…for there will be those who will chose Christ even in those awful times and many will suffer for Him.

These will be the martyrs under His Altar crying out to the Father to avenge their blood.

Rapture is only a word used to describe an event . Some call it the catching up, the gathering, the great assembly. It is a word like "trinity’ or “purgatory”, neither of which is Written, but a theological descriptive word.

Jesus described the birth pangs that have come and have gotten stronger.

We have been warned . And we have been told to rejoice.

For the sake of the elect? Wait, weren’t the elect supposed to have been raptured? No, keep reading.

[BIBLEDRB]Mt 24:29-31[/BIBLEDRB]

As it says: The Rapture will occur after the tribulation.

In the case of Noah, those who were snatched away died. In the case of Sodom, those who were snatched away also died.

We WANT to be left behind!

The elect, those who mourn, are the 144,000 jews who are sealed by God. They remain, but are under God’s protection.

Not for Catholics.

Where does the Catholic teach anything about “rapture” similarly to teachings about the Trinity or purgatory?

Interesting interpretation.

Just let’s be clear…not what the Catholic Church teaches (for what it’s worthy).

My protestant inlaws really got irritated with me when I pointed out that throughout the bible, being taken away is never a good thing.😉

I simply meant that the words “trinity” and “purgatory” do not exist in the Bible. Just as the word “rapture” does not exist there.

Fair to say, with repect of course, tha the catholic church does not teach about being “rapture-ready”😃

just as

evangelicals are not going to , ahem. “purgatory” :D:D:D

but all worship the Trinity

1 Thessalonians 4:17 is where “rapture” appears in the New Testament. Only there.

[BIBLELVB]1 Thessalonians 4:17[/BIBLELVB]

You’re referring to the term rapiemur which means to be caught up. But remember that the Vulgate is also a translation. This is not a name for a specific event.

RAPIEMUR

a latin word

and you guys wonder why some Christians call it “rapture”?
