What is the best way to get a comprhensive, thorough, traditional, orthodox, and in depth biblical studies program done short of going to classes? What are the best books or the best authors out there for Catholics interested in biblical studies? Thanks!

For Old Testament I enjoyed one of our textbooks in Jewish Roots class:

Reading the Old Testament by Lawrence Boadt - it will take you through the OT and the context it was being cannonized in with all the different voices and writers

There are quite a few articles on veritasbible.com (there is a link in this forum). The Haydock Commentary I hear is good, so is the Navarre Bible (I don’t have the funds for either, unfortunately). There are probably some articles at NewAdvent (if they don’t have any, I’d be surprised!) Ignatius and Baronius Press are good publishers for orthodox material in my experience, you might be able to find something there. I haven’t checked the Catholic.com shop, but you could check there as well. Most of the stuff there would be apologetics material though.

Hope this helps!

the church’s advice to studying the Bible is to read it alongside a commentary.

My own impression is that the tell-all, end-all commentary has not been written. do some searches online and join the rest of us in searching.

The New Jerome Biblical Commentary is not what it may sound like. It is a very high level scholarly overview, with many refereces to primary commentaries. Its value is its overview of methods of Bible interpretation over the centuries, which would point you to what you’re looking for. But, this is probably way too much if you’re just starting out. This book is now 20 years old and does not reflect the most modern Catholic trends.

Fortunately, there seems to be a good crop of Catholic Bible teachers out there today.

Anything that Benedict XVI has his name on is very scholarly (almost too scholarly for a non-academic person). The two volumes of Jesus of Nazareth are excellent, if you can keep up with the pace of issues the Pope is discussing. Thank God for B16.

An excellent Catholic Bible Study with detailed commentary (Title: CAN YOU TRUST THE BIBLE) may be freely downloaded from the URL of Emeritus Theologian - Frances Hogan. Here’s the link: franceshogan.com/en/books/

Incidently, it is not very different from the course material of St.Paul’s Bible Institute, Chennai (INDIA), which conducts a 2-year correspondence Bible Study course

There’s a ton of good stuff out there and it varies in emphasis, style, and format. It really depends what level of Scripture knowledge you have and where you want to go. What did you have in mind?
