Former Vice President Joe Biden said Monday he would return to Obama-era policies of engagement with Cuba and reverse the Trump administration’s sanctions if he wins the White House race in November.

“In large part, I would go back,” Biden said in an interview with a CBS affiliate in Miami. “I’d still insist they keep the commitments they said they would make when we, in fact, set the policy in place.”
There goes Florida. We can’t support dictators. Yes, we do do that some and two wrongs don’t make a right.

I don’t get why people believe that should be a decisive issue in that state. Only 29% of people from Florida are of Cuban origin (so not a majority), and the number that care strongly about foreign policy towards Cuba is probably less than that total population.

Obama won Florida twice.
So? Both times were before the horrible Cuba deal. 2014 is the date of that. You might check out your timeline. The largest concentration of Cuban-Americans in the US is in Florida.

Cuban American Democratic Senator Robert Menendez:

Menendez on Obama Cuba deal: ‘I think it stinks’

Updated Mar 29, 2019; Posted Dec 17, 2014

Sen. Robert Menendez emphasizes a point as he opposes President Obama’s proposed shift in U.S.-Cuba policy.

(Jonathan D. Salant | NJ Advance Media)

SAYREVILLE — U.S. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) today blasted President Obama’s decision to begin re-establishing diplomatic relations with Cuba and easing economic restrictions imposed on the communist country.
.
“I think it stinks,” Menendez, the son of Cuban immigrants and the outgoing Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, said at a press conference on new financial help for Hurricane Sandy residents. “I think it’s wrong. I am deeply disappointed in the president.”
Horrible deal, not helpful to the Cuban people. I’d encourage all to check out what Cuban-Americans and Cuban media think of what Biden said.

My personal view is that Menendez had his troubles because he didn’t toe the line on issues like Cuba and Iraq. He’s a smart guy on international issues.

Im not an expert on Florida politics, but my understanding is that the Cuban population is not as unified on this issue as it once was. Hawkishness on Cuba is more of an older generation thing now.

True, but as close as FL often is, I wouldn’t tick off any voters if I could avoid it. Still, if Biden believes that is the best policy, glad is is saying so rather than hiding his intentions (like everyone used to do about recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Almost everyone running always said they supported it, but no one ever did anything to that end once elected. Hollow words.)

This is all very true, it is conventional wisdom and it was said before this Cuban deal.

But now, the 'deal’s is seen as largely unhelpful if not harmful and largely doing nothing but propping up the government

Its about time we normalized relations with Cuba. 60 years of economic embargo and trying to ruin its economy is enough. And, yes, I am troubled by Cuba’s electronic attack on our embassy.

As to dealing with dictatorships, the current administration is in love with dictators and strong man rule. So being normal with Cuba would not be a quantum leap for it.

Apart from how any of this would play out with certain voting blocs in Florida, one thing I would suggest is that renewing a closer relationship with Cuba could be used to further isolate Venezuela. Right now, the relationship between the two countries is extremely close, but if Cuba could look more to the United States for critical trade, in particular oil, the less it would rely on Venezuela. Breaking the ties between those two countries makes strong strategic sense.

Check out, even Democrats in Florida don’t stab the Cuban constituency in the back. Menendez (NJ) eloquently states how terrible that deal is.

After 60 years, if you haven’t made progress, it is likely the policy sucks.
As a general rule
