Big church, small church

This is a topic that always seems to come up in passing … I thought it might be worthwhile to try and gather different thoughts on it in one thread. 🙂

One stipulation: I’m thinking of *Catholic *churches (i.e. in communion with Rome). That is, I’d like to keep the main focus there, although I don’t mind if we extend to non-Catholic churches by way of analogy.

Well I’m not sure if this answers the question but here goes nothing 🙂

I think depending on the times the church should be both big and small

It is prophesied that the Catholic Church will downsize drastically and then it will grow again in an era of peace. Soon after that the great tribulation begins and the church with be persecuted but will grow. I guess Gods plan is to have a big church as he told us to preach the gospel to all the nations.

Big church, small church. What begins with ‘church’? :rolleyes:

I used to attend a small church but it was absorbed by the big one in town because there weren’t enough priests. There are, I think, 1800 families in this church (not sure how many in that number are practicing Catholics though).
 
Peter, can you expound a little on what this thread is supposed to be about? :confused: I have a feeling that it’s one of those things that is crystal clear to you, but that clarity somehow doesn’t come through here at all. 🙂
 
Good question, Corki. I wasn’t thinking specifically of preferences, but that’s one possibility. More generally: experiences, observations, theories, helpful hints are all good. 👍

For example, among the 14 Greek Catholic (sui iuris) Churches, there are vast differences in size (e.g. the membership of the UGCC is more than a thousand times that of the Albanian Byzantine Catholic Church). Possibly someone might comment on the experience of belonging to a big one or in a small one. (Of course, now that I’ve said that, someone will probably chime in to disagree, saying that church-size doesn’t affect one’s experience at all. :))

P.S. Thoughts about parish churches are welcome too. :cool:

I was thinking of parishes. :o I didn’t realize this was focusing on Eastern Catholicism.

Thank you for saying that. 🙂 To be honest, it’s more like I couldn’t figure out how to word a question; so I just hoped that once I proposed the topic, a direction for the thread to go in would however “emerge”. 😊 :cool:

That’s fine. :cool: When I wrote the OP, I considered limiting the topic to sui iuris churches; but then I thought “If anyone wants to post about big/small parishes, that would be good too.” 👍
