a few years ago i was in a long distance relationship, which lasted for about 1.5 years. the reason it ended was that, one day while sitting in church, i got this overwhelming “feeling” or thought that i only wanted to be served. i assumed that this was from God, and that he was referring to my constant battle with lust so i broke up with her. i did not have contact with her at all for two years until about 6 months ago. now she has come back into my life and she and i have again begun a relationship (about 6 months now), and have talked about marriage and kids. the only thing keeping me from marrying this woman is the “message” i received from God two years ago. am i an absoulte fool for being in a relationship with this woman? I know God never changes His mind, but could it be that she and/or i just weren’t ready at the earlier time? am i just rationalizing my own desires? how can i know what path to take, when God has not given me any indication other than the “thought” 2.5 years ago? i am a wreck and do not want to doom myself to hell because i didn’t listen to God. any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

The only thing that damns one to hell is un-repented mortal sin.

Pray and ask for an ‘update’ on that message - maybe it was a ‘not right now’ thing rather than ‘not ever’.

I was in a long distance relationship with my wife for 2.5 years it was very hard on us. We chatted every night via Yahoo. I was so lonely sometimes I thought I was going to die.

I agree with the prior poster, remember the parable of the unjust judge. All the time the woman petishioned the judge he finally gave in. So much more with your Heavenly Father. Maybe start doing the rosary together.

But be prepared, sometimes God gives us what we want even though it is not necessarily what is best for us.

I might suggest you go to a priest for spiritual direction.

a. the only thing keeping me from marrying this woman is the “message” i received from God two years ago. am i an absoulte fool for being in a relationship with this woman? I .
I think the first area to address, before looking at your relationship with this woman or any other, is your spiritual health, and the entire notion of taking any idle thought and considering it a message from God. Spiritual direction from a good priest, in and outside confession, is indicated.

i did break up with her just last week, but seeing the pain, hurt, and suffering in her eyes and face just ripped my heart out of my chest so i made amends with her.
anyway, thanks again for all your comments, i am very grateful. do you think the marriage preparation program at my parish would be a good way to work out these questions, or should i/we consult with a priest separately before beginning the program? she and i are going to confession tomorrow together, so i will be more conversational with my confessor then.
