Big History: David Christian & the late Fr.Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, SJ

I just want to share this interesting presentation by David Christian on the TED Talk. It is about the beginning of universe till today. You can watch it here: ted.com/talks/david_christian_big_history.html

His idea of collective learning seems to resonate with Fr. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s unification of consciousness.Fr. Pierre pointed the ultimate goal of such unification is to surge towards God, or what he called the Omega point.

I am always awe struck by the creation of universe and the creation of life, against the second law of thermodynamics.

Life does not violate thermodynamics.

The operation of a living organism locally decreases entropy internally (I.e., inside a human skin). However, a greater amount of entropy is output into the world, through breathing, elimination, etc. Thermodynamics still holds.

Life no more violates thermodynamics than does crystal formation. Both involve the local limitation of entropy.

Fascinating presentation. I agree it probably gives Teilhardians goose bumps, but really, if we continued progressing like this for a trillion, trillion years, “big history” alone would take us no closer to the infinite (Omega point?) than we were one second after the big bang.
