What do you think of HBO’s series Big Love? A story of a Utah man with three wives.

I say Rubbish!

Awesome show! I never got into Six Feet Under, and I didnt think I would find a show to come close to the Sopranos, but this is great! Its like Desperate Housewives for MEN only MUCH BETTER!

Any guy thinking being married to more than one woman would be “cool” just check out what poor Bil Paxton goes thru! 😃

I was just coming to this board to see if there was a thread on this show!

I’ve enjoyed this show. One of the things that I like about it is that the characters have a sense of morality. Of course, they are basically Mormon and engagning in illegal behavior, which is not good. But, they have faith in something, they don’t drink and swear, they don’t do so many of the things that typical tv characters usually do. I like that the show tries to portray a sense of religion. It’s just a nice change from completely irreligious, secular characters. And sure, it’s Mormonism, but they have some similar beliefs to us.

It’s just nice to not have characters having casual, one-night stand sex, not going to bars and strip clubs, not saying the J_C_ curse all the time.

And, yes, the show is made by worldly atheists and they want viewers, so there are some sex scenes and naked butts that I could do without, but overall still, I’m enjoying it.

I have not seen the show, but the man in question must be a glutton for punishment, one mother in law is enough but 3

Hey, the next great push after same sex is polygamy.
Anybody want to guess what will come next in a world
without fixed morality.

Actually, the show raised that very point a few episodes back. The Elder, was being interviewed for newpaper story on Polygomy and he said, the minute gays are allowed to legally marry, the court will have no choice BUT to acknowledge their ways which are more biblical based than homosexuality.

Great show!

I really like it, with reservations though.

Looking at some articles written immediately after or shortly before the show debuted, social conservatives were decrying the show as a promotion for polygamy. But having watched the latter part of the second season (and beginning the first season on DVD), I would have to disagree. Sure, Bill Hendrickson is able to provide well for his three wives and children. But beyond that, it’s all weird, wacky, and messed up. One of the wives’ father is a bizarre “patriarch” with 14 wives of his own who took a 14-year-old girl as his “child bride”. We found out that Bill’s father was paid by Bill himself to take his wife. Bill’s older children spite their living situation, Nicki’s family is simply messed up, with all kinds of weird conspiracies going around. And, not to mention, that most of these people live in “compounds” of one sort or another, and at least until recently, Bill’s wives rarely left home.

The show leaves you with this strange emotional sympathy for the characters, and to an extent, their way of life. But on the other hand, you realize that it’s an immoral lifestyle fraught with countless problems.

A further example of the Dysfunctional Show, the standard model for people on TV.

I remind my Christian brothers and sisters, where is the “entertainment” in watching sinful behavior acted out?

God bless,
Ed

This is my absolute favourite show. I’m just crazy about it. Like some of the other posters I like how there is a strong sense of morality even though it is Mormon focused. In one episode I noticed in the background of Nicky’s house a painting of Jesus and I thought how nice to see that in a home on TV especially since you barely see that in many young family homes today. Also, each wife’s bedroom has a cross near the door. It’s the same cross in each bedroom - does anyone know what it is? I thought it might be a Celtic cross.

I like how the show presents the issues from both a religious and secular standpoint. For example, there was the one episode I vaguely recall where Roman’s comeback to someone’s criticism of pologmy was that many great prophets from the Old Testament like Moses and Jacob had multiple wives. Are they to be called perverts and sinners? Now, of course the issue of forcing young girls into marriage is serious but I liked that the point was raised.

I can go on and on about Big Love. I can’t wait until the next season. Does anyone know when it starts?

Some things I don’t like. I’m really begginning to dislike Margie. She’s the only one of three wives that doesn’t have that strong drive to be a person a faith. I can’t stand that she wants to bring that Ana chick in as another wife. And don’t get me started on Bill “dating” Ana. However, I guess I will always have a soft-spot for Margie because she stopped Nicky from throwing the rosary in the garbage. I thought it was hillarious when at dinner in that episode Nicky was complaining that the Catholic school was trying to convert her son and when Bill told she was being ridiculous she responded by asking the kid what Thursday was and he cheerfully said “It’s the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary”. The look on Bill’s face was priceless!

I like the pledge to chastity that the older two kids took and how that was spoken about often. I liked how it showed how devasted Barb was to find out Benny was no longer a virgin. Wait until she finds out about Sarah (that was truly sad wasn’t it?).

Does anyone else think that as a “lost boy”, Bill had to resort to prostitution to survive? It seems to have been hinted at.

Ok, I have to stop now because I can go on for hours about Big Love!

I blogged about this show in June following the predictable MSM endorsements one would expect from an “anything goes” culture.

It is my understanding from people who’ve escaped polygamous / polyamorous relationships, both as children or as wives (it’s nearly always one man and many women, BTW) that the show does not jive with the harsh reality of these twisted arrangements.

You’re right…besides, I really can not understand how one woman would allow her husband to sleep with another woman, say in a marriage of convenience… I further cannot comprehend that a woman would be willing to share him 24 hours 7 days a week with other 'wives." Or that one man does not possess the desire for matrimonial love for one lone woman.

They do a good job from what I’ve seen on a few occasoins, of completely ignoring this aspect of humanity. Just my take on the show…

Apart from all this, it really took me by surprise that Tom Hanks is reportedly one of the producers. Doesn’t this just seem wrong for someone who is usually the “good guy” in his movies? I had always considered him to be a good male role model. 😦

There is no way you can watch Big Love and not know that sharing her husband is killing Barb. That’s been her sole issue for both seasons and the question hanging over Barb all season 2 was whether she was going to walk away from the “principle”. I find it hard to believe you said you’ve seen the show on a few occassions and not known that this is a key theme of the show. In fact, Barb (whom Bill was in a normal marriage with for about 12 years) comes from a traditional LDS family who has shut her out because she agreed to let Bill take more wives after she survived cancer. Then there is Sarah, Bill and Barb’s teenage daughter who totally disagrees with the lifestyle and sees the pain it causes her mother. They have brought up the question of why one wife is not enough. In fact Barb’s mother said exactly that, she said something like “what’s wrong with him that he can’t be happy with one woman?” Then there is Sarah’s friend Heather and her parents who are regular LDS. They don’t want Heather to be friends with Sarah because of her parents plural marriage.

And as for your original question about how can a woman allow herself to share her husband with other wives, the question goes back to an episode where that was brought up and the rebuttal from the head of the compound was many great figures in our Bible were either men with multiple wives or women who had “sister-wives” (for lack of a better term). That’s why I love this show, it doesn’t just have one point-of-view about plural marriage.

“plural marriage”? People can’t write Polygamy anymore?

God bless,
Ed

I’m curious if you’ve watched the show? Because there is at least one writer on the staff who left a compound like Ju(name removed by moderator)er Creek which is why LDS’rs and former poly people have commented on some of the "insider’ comments/themes that have been in the show. To me they paint the life on the compound as depraved and sick (in fact Barb refers to it as a “cess-pool”). There’s Bill’s dad Frank who kept his wives in poverty and collecting welfare while he secretly had tons of money socked away from himself. There’s the threat that hangs over husbands and wives who go against the main “Prophet” that the men will be exiled and the women “reassigned”. Then there’s the ultra-sick other compound group the “Greens” who are apparently based on an actual group but I forget the name. The show doesn’t appear to sugar-coat life on the compound to me at least.

Well, all I can say is that we all have different opinions of what good entertainment is and the important thing to remember is that it is only entertainment. I did watch the series finale and I’ll tell you…that Alby is truly twisted 🙂

By the way, the multiple wives with one husband was not condoned by God in the end…
