Sorry - I brainfarted while typing and meant to write “by a significant portion of the U.S.” No, I know we’re not a Catholic country by any stretch.

There are ways that are acceptable of poking fun, and Maher goes beyond the acceptable to the offensive.

God help this poor man. He truly doesn’t know what he is doing.

The difference with Behar is that her hatred/bitterness for catholicism stems from personal experince----she grew up in an Italian-American Catholic family-------her jewish last name nothwithstanding; she’s twice been married to jewish men. 👍

Anyway, her catholic hatred comes “honestly,” if one can put it that way.

Now there’s another secular atheist so-and-so I can’t stand. May God forgive me for that, too.

Ya think maybe in his darkest hour, perhaps yet to come, he may ask himself, “what if it’s true. What if Jesus really is God incarnate, what if I am going to find myself in that airline hanger watching a movie of my life prior to judgement”?

I think he just may. I pray God gives him the opportunity to think long and hard about it when that day comes. And I pray he repents tearfully before his final good-bye.

Perhaps we can all incude Maher in our prayers this lent.

I’d like to think prayers would help him-and God knows I want them too- (pun intended) but hearts are hardened. His will be a tough one to crack.

I cancelled HBO years ago because of Maher. I don’t miss either one.

I really used to love Bill Maher a few years ago. I know that the majority of Catholics who use this site are politically conservative and so it’s likely that most people here have never liked Bill or any famous liberal for that matter. That’s ok, I’m not here to debate politics. I just find it so sad that Bill feels he has to wage this war against faith. With his horrible film Religulous and various attacks like the one mentioned above he has declared war on all faiths.

I know he’s been an atheist for a long time, but I never had a problem with him having his own personal beliefs. So he’s an atheist, that sucks for him. If I were a friend of his I’d try to gradually and gently persuade him that he’s mistaken, but since I don’t know him I can’t try to convince him of his error. But now he’s gone from atheist to militant atheist, he’s become a faithless version of the people he despises so much (radical fundamentalists). Instead of being content to let others believe as they will he feels compelled to attack faith at every opportunity relying on lies and exaggerations to achieve his goals. It’s very sad.

At the same time I do hold out a sliver of hope that his rage is that darkest hour before the spiritual dawn for him. I’ve noticed that most of the time it’s the people who are indifferent about religion who are really lost and hardest to reach. But those who rail against it, those who fight with you do have feelings about faith, even if for the moment they hate it. These people are more open (whether they know it or not) to finding God than people who simply go through the motions with no thought or feeling or are so indifferent that they don’t even bother with the formality of going to church anymore. Just look at C.S. Lewis for instance, who rebelled against God for so long only to become one of the most famous Christian apologists of the century. He was converted from being cold to being hot, not from being lukewarm.

With that said, I won’t hold my breath waiting for Bill to find God and repent. However, what I will do is pray for him. Maybe you could too? The Lord asks us to pray for those who persecute us. Who knows, maybe our prayers will make the difference?
Very mature and understanding view!! 👍
I can’t help but think if St Paul prior to his conversion when I see people like Bill persecuting the Church. I, too, don’t hold by breath that he will repent, but I expect the early Christians never expected Saul of Tarsus to repent either.

I never give up hope and faith in the miraculous, even if it never happens.

Let’s see the Jewish Maher lambaste a bunch of Jewish “sacramentals” - or better yet, let’s see him boldly go where no one has gone before in trashing Islam. Or - pinnacle of pinnacles - let him rake the moronic “new” atheists over the coals (as they deserve to be).

Maher’s particular kind of cowardice hides behind celebrity, “humor”, and setting up theological straw men - in order to knock them down with Maher’s “superior”, fashionable, disbelief. It carefully cherry picks “safe” targets.

Sneering at religion is easy. When was the last time Maher had the guts and humility to sneer at his own stupidities? I won’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

Ashame he’s so angry, I found the Catholics Come Home site not long after I joined here, and found it very reassuring.

For what it’s worth, I can relate to Bill’s bitterness. I fell away from my Catholic upbringing in childhood, and was once as angry and nasty towards Catholicism as Bill is. I think there’s a bit of a “pendulum effect” involved, when someone falls away, they *really *fall away… and it just takes time to for things to swing back again 😉

I don’t know if I can ever “be Catholic” again (still considering it though), but if nothing else, since coming here my bitterness has washed away and I’ve found a newfound respect and even admiration for your Faith.
I understand what you’re saying mgreen. as a Catholic. The things people (who represent the Church) do makes me angry at times. Almost makes me feel like doing what homer does to bart when he gets angry. Things like taking the reference to Mary being a virgin out of the bible. Pre Jesus birth no less. Something even the most protestant of protestants wouldn’t deny.
I sometimes think. why even bother? And just walk away. And walking away from something you love can make one bitter and angry, Much like you said you were. But the majority of people like yourself, eventually lose this anger. And whether they come back to the Church or not, find a place of peace within themselves. But some can’t let go. I don’t know why. Maybe it is emotional immaturity. Or maybe they have found a way to make money out of this bitterness… Both seem to apply to maher.

Maher is someone who doesn’t believe in the literal interpretations of the Bible. Example, the talking snake in Genesis. To him, snakes don’t talk >>> so it isn’t real.

I talked at length with my priest about this and he said that with atheist, just let them go. He said there is nothing you can say or do to reason with them. They are totally incapable.

I will have to disagree with your priest. No one is beyond the reach of God. And how does God primarily work in the world? Through His people, us. True I have yet to convince any atheists I know into converting to Christianity, but I’ve only been brave enough to actively try to spread the faith for about two years. And one of my formerly atheist friends is now agnostic, which considering how absolutely sure he used to be that all religions were false I view his current questionings as a great victory.

Also, no offense, but your priest may want to look up a man named C.S. Lewis who was once an atheist. 😉
