It may be “nonsense” to some people to protect yourself with firearms. It doesn’t matter whether it is against a single person breaking into your home to kill or rape you, or a gov’t that attacks it’s citizens. I have personally never had either happen to me. Hope I never will. If it does happen I will certainly defend myself.

It has been declared in court that the police DO NOT have to put themselves in harms way to protect you. Therefore I have a concealed weapons permit in order to protect my life, or the life of someone I am in the presence of that needs protecting. I am also a sworn deputy sheriff.

It seems many here believe that those that choose to exercise their 2nd amendment right to keep and bear arms are fat, sloppy “Bubba-Types.” You are watching too much TV.

I am an AMERICAN citizen. I am not a citizen of the Vatican State. I am loyal to Rome in that I support the Holy Father, pray for him, and support the One True Church founded by Jesus Christ. But, I DO NOT take orders from the Vatican City-State.

“IF” it ever came down to a gov’t trying to forcefully take my liberty and freedom, or protecting myself from that entity…well. Give me liberty or give me death!!! Period. Without liberty and freedom you are not living, you are simply surviving.

Do you think it’s realistic to think citizens with handguns can win against military in the event of a perceived tyranny? Keep in mind that suicide is a mortal sin in most cases, and that’s what you’ll be doing if you ever decide to take on the military.

Just because the odds are against me does not make me suicidal. I am not talking about charging hell with a water pistol. There are numerous accounts of Congressional Medal of Honor recipients who heroically overcame astonishing odds in battle. Was Leonidas and the 300 committing suicide at Thermopylae? I think they were in the right and withstood the best they were able to. Isn’t that the difference between taking the wide road and the narrow path?

I am one who likes to keep things simple. So how about this?
Three guys with want to kill me. They also make the laws. They tell me it is unlawful for me to have a shield. Am I supposed to throw my shield away?

There are certain inalienable rights. Protecting my life is one of those. “IF” the gov’t had a FOOL-PROOF way of protecting me, then things might be different. That is hardly the case today. But I do not have a obligation, moral or otherwise, to bow down to a tyrannical authority. I am not saying that our gov’t is tyrannical…but the OP dealt with supposition.

Your own tag line could apply:
“Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”
-John 12:25

Suicide also implies wanting to die…I only WANT to die when I am called by the Proper Authority; not a gov’t one.

Hmmmm…

Americans as a group seem terrified of tyranny, probably more than any other nation.

And yet, we deeply admire the nation’s military forces ( as we should); we do not fear them.

So if we are not afraid that the military will somehow tyrannize us, how do we expect the civil government to try to do so?

In the USA the President is the Commander-in-Chief of the military. The military is at the beck and call of the gov’t.

I have to sign off now, but I will definitely check back on this thread later.

God Bless

Romans
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

I’m not a fan of ignoring problems. It usually comes to bite me in the behind later on
John 19:10-11
[10] Pilate therefore saith to him: Speakest thou not to me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and I have power to release thee?

[11] Jesus answered: Thou shouldst not have any power against me, unless it were given thee from above.

Getting back to the original post, do you think it’s rational to believe that citizens armed with hand guns can ward-off our modern, high tech military?

No, and that’s why some are stockpiling weapons of all kinds, not just handguns. Then again, these are not the most rational people either.

“Even a paranoid can have enemies.” - Henry Kissinger
But armed paranoids are a threat to everybody else.

In the formation of a civil society, everybody gives up certain prerogatives for the common good.

Although Americans generally think of limitations on killing ability as unthinkable, others see it as making sense.

Just a very, very small minority of citizens, still not much of a threat, and as long as they stay in their underground bunkers, or where ever they plan to hide out, they will go unnoticed. If they were foolish enough to engage in a violent protest, these will merely die in a bloodbath. No match for an army helicopter or drone. Marshal Law would be ordered, and such an area would be declared a war-zone. Snipers? Maybe a few, and once dead they remain dead, with nobody to take their place. Rocket launchers? Extremely rare!

With phones tapped and their email being scrutinized, they would not be able to mobilize into a cohesive fighting group.

If good men had simply “lined up” when a oppressive governments told them to we would still be under British domination.

Should German Jews just have turned themselves in during WWII? Should the Christians living in Roman catacombs just have submitted to Roman authorities? I think there needs to be some context here. A gov’t doing the right thing should be submitted to.

After all - it was for the common good.
