In a recent interview with The Guardian promoting his new film “Saint Vincent”, Bill Murray shared his thoughts on his recent canonizations, Latin Mass, and sacred music:
His parents were Irish Catholics; one of his sisters is a nun. This conspicuous religion adds to his broad church appeal (there’s a citation from the Christian Science Monitor on his golfing memoirs). You don’t need to ask if his faith is important to him. He talks about how 19th-century candidates risk not getting canonised because the church is keen to push ahead with the likes of John Paul II and Mother Teresa. “I think they’re just trying to get current and hot,” he smiles.

All true!

Bill was seven years ahead of me at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, IL.

Sister Nancy is about five years older than Bill. She was already a Domincian nun when Bill was in Second City. She was my sophomore Theology teacher.

And yes he was funny even then. He even put on a special show at Loyola each year and brought friends along like Harold Ramis and Tim Kazurinsky.

We have a common priest friend (a Jesuit) who said the only time he ever laughed during mass was during a retreat when Bill was one of the altar boys. To this day he won’t tell me the details.

There really is something transcending about sacred music and ritualistic, sacred liturgy.
