Bill O’Reilly, a Catholic, has said on his show numerous times that he thinks Adam and Eve were just allegorical. Doesn’t the Catholic Church teach that Adam and Eve were real people?

Also, I do know that Catholics are allowed to believe in evolution.

How else did Sin enter the world?

O’Reilly is entitled to his opinion but his opinion in this regard is wrong.
Adam and Eve did exist.
We know they existed because through Adam and Eve, Sin entered the world.

There may be room to differ.

For example…I happen to think that “Adam and Eve” were the first people to have human souls, and the first sinners. Were they named “Adam” and “Eve”? I have no idea, and it’s not really relevant, is it? Does that make them “allegorical”? I don’t know; maybe somewhat. I also think it’s 100% consistent with Church teaching.

Really - who cares what the arrogant loud mouth of a cowardly man has to say about anything? I know I don’t.

I think it would depend on what is meant by “allegorical”. That there was no fall? That there was a fall, but that Genesis isn’t reporting rapt history on this topic?

Not enough information from O’Reilly to go on.

Catholics are required to believe Adam and Eve were real people.

HUMANI GENERIS (Encyclical Promulgated on 12 August 1950 )
(Concerning Some False Opinions Threatening to Undermine the Foundations of Catholic Doctrine)
Pope Pius XII

**Extract from the Encyclical:
  1. When, however, there is question of another conjectural opinion, namely polygenism, the children of the Church by no means enjoy such liberty. For the faithful cannot embrace that opinion which maintains either that after Adam there existed on this earth true men who did not take their origin through natural generation from him as from the first parent of all or that Adam represents a certain number of first parents. Now it is in no way apparent how such an opinion can be reconciled with that which the sources of revealed truth and the documents of the Teaching Authority of the Church propose with regard to original sin, which proceeds from a sin actually committed by an individual Adam and which through generation is passed on to all and is in everyone as his own.**

I stopped watching O’Reilly because he misrepresents the Catholic faith repeatedly. Over the holidays he was arguing with the atheists who sue over the word “Christmas Tree” and stuff, and he argued from the perspective that Christianity isn’t a religion but a “philosophy” and at that point he totally lost me.

Mr. O’Reilly is not a legitimate source for information on the Catholic faith and its too bad because he has a great platform from which he could really give voice to the Truth, but he chooses not to.

When I think “Catholic” the last thing I think is Bill O’Reilly. Glenn Beck was also a Catholic until he “saw the light” and became a mormon, or jehovas witness or some nonsense.

I think Polar’s right.

As far as Church teaching goes, we certainly had first parents (that is to say, first ensouled human beings) from whom we descend and who were created (whether through evolution or not) with preternatural grace. They lost this grace through sin, and so we find ourselves where we are today - except for the loving work of our Lord, of course! 🙂

Whether they were called “Adam” or “Eve” is doubtful, since, after all, the names themselves are metaphorical.

Wrong or not, I don’'t believe it would be far to call THAT man a “coward”. I really enjoy his books. Try “Who’s Looking Out for You”.

If there were no Adam and Eve, there was no original sin, if there is no original sin, why do we need baptism, or indeed a Savior. If there is no original Eve, there is no need for a new Eve, or a new Adam. I don’t understand how Mr. Oreilly can say what he believes in catholic, considering the word itself means universal, what he’s espousing isn’t catholic at all, it sounds more gnostic to me. Nothing personal, he may be a wonderful fellow, but It leaves me rather confused.

O’Reilly has no teaching authority. For guys like him it is not chic to believe in Adam and Eve.

Isn’t it, in some respects, utterly depressing to live in a time like ours where people will believe absolutely anything (Nessie, astrological signs, psychics, multiverses, that we have ancestors who were apes, Scientology, the Secret, the Gospel of Oprah and Eckart Tolle, alien abduction, the Big Foot, and so on and so forth) but prime yourself for rolling of the eyes, uncontrollable fits of laughter, scoffing or downright scorn if people come to know about one’s belief in a literal couple, Adam and Eve*. I’d like to see a poll where Catholics are asked about their beliefs in a literal first couple, I wouldn’t expect to see high percentages.

*The names may have been changed…

Really - who cares what the arrogant loud mouth of a cowardly man has to say about anything? I know I don’t.
He spouts his opinion, whether you agree with him or not, in front of millions of people while you spout yours from the safety of an internet forum and you think he’s a coward? I find this quite humorous.

While Bill is entitled to his own opnion and I do think that politicallyhe makes good points, i’ve never thought he’s been a good rep for his faith. For one thing I swore he’s said Civil Unions are okay, but not gay marriage. Also, I think it was either him or Sean Hannity who made a big deal about eating meat on a Friday, and i think both of them support birth control (if i’m wrong on any of this, someone please correct me:))

Either way, I think O’reilly and Hannity are what i like to call “conservative cafeteria catholics” While they feel they aren’t as bad as those liberal catholics who support social justice and the like, still pick and choose what they like. If you want good Catholic guys to listen or watch, just go to EWTN. Can’t go wrong with EWTN:thumbsup: **

I watch the O’reilly show regularly and when talks about Christianity I usually think he should stick to talking about other things
