Hello all! I am wondering if anyone has used either binaural beats or isochronic tones for meditative prayer? Thoughts on the two from a Christian - Catholic perspective would be great as well.

God Bless!

I don’t know what they are, but if you mean some kind of music or sound, no I find it hinders meditation and is distracting. I may play sacred music at other times, but not during meditation. I can pray in a noisy atmosphere – in church while the choir is practicing, after Mass with all the bustle and chatter, in the chapel when someone else is praying out loud, at the shrine where chant is piped in most of the time, but I prefer silence. In the chapel next to my office there is often a strong base beat that rattles the window because our next door neighbor’s kid has a garage band. That may be the worst of all because it is so “subliminal.”

Binaural beats are tones of two different frequencies that are transmitted through your ears by ear buds. Each ear bud plays a different tone and the brain subtracts the two frequencies to create an acceptable frequency. As your brain varies in frequencies throughout the day due to various sound waves (and when you sleep / go through various stages of the day) the tones mimic these frequencies. Isochronic tones do essentially the same thing except that they can be used without ear buds.

Is it wrong to use these as relaxation techniques then?

Never heard of that. In my case, just transmitting the same tone into each ear would provide that effect. My left ear hears things a half step off (don’t remember right now higher or lower) from my right ear.

I once looked into this as well - of course I can’t remember now what made me decide not to do it, but I do know that it was a reason of a more spiritual nature. I’ll try to go back and figure out why I made that decision…

i have made attempts to include these in to my prayers in the past. after praying for a while, i came to the conclusion that the saints on our alters reached states of deep prayer without the help of binaural beats. i figure if you need help praying, ask the holy spirit you give you the gift. ask for what you don’t have from God so that you can do what you can’t to glorify Him.

If they work, the effect is natural and there is nothing wrong with using them to relax or concentrate or sleep. But do they work? Many people seem to think so, but the research is very inconclusive.

This is an old post I am bumping up. I wonder about this. I approach it with suspicion, so much that I do not want to listen to a sample. I want to know about it first. I wonder if anyone now knows of it and can comment on it?

Also there is this thread on the same topic, though, I still don’t have a solid answer. I avoid things the New Age embraces, though, there are some things I do use occasionally that the New Age embraces, like a little homeopathy, which I have used occasionally for years, as its such a non-invasive way to deal with a specific problem like an allergy flare-up). Anyway, someone I know is using these beats and tones, and I want to warn her, but don’t have any basis to…
