I am visiting my parents parish and just asking as the title suggests. Is this okay? I had a funny feeling it’s not, but I’m wrong all the time on these things. Just seemed weird to sing Bind us Together when we should be doing the Agnus Dei.

You are quite correct that it is wrong.

If priests would just **Say the black. Do the red then **everything would be alright.

That’s a great thought, except that it almost certainly doesn’t apply in this situation. OP, you are correct that at that moment we should be saying/singing the “Lamb of God” text. I’m sure someone will post the relavent paragraph from the GIRM, but that’s how it’s supposed to be.

Do you remember the lyrics that you heard? I’m just curious to learn what you heard.

what do you mean “it almost certainly doesn’t apply in this situation”?!?!? It most certainly does. In the order of Mass, it says that after the sign of peace, the lamb of god is to be sung. If you said the black, you would say the lamb of god.

no, it’s never ok in any situation. its been addressed so many times, but heres one pertinent paragraph from redemptonis sacramentum

[59.] The reprobated practice by which Priests, Deacons or the faithful here and there alter or vary at will the texts of the Sacred Liturgy that they are charged to pronounce, must cease. For in doing thus, they render the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy unstable, and not infrequently distort the authentic meaning of the Liturgy.

Much as I love that hymn, no, it is not proper to replace the Agnus Dei with anything else.

You’re absolutely right!

Please, Fathers, SAY THE BLACK, DO THE RED! Stop all this ad-libbing!

‘If a’int broke, don’t fix it!’

Sheesh…!

It applies to the priest if he is the one leading it. If the cantor/choir/musician is leading it, they aren’t likely to have the missal infront of them with the red and black texts. That’s all.

And, by the way, the Lamb of God should be capitalized. We are referencing Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

At one time, at the introduction of the OF, musicians were allowed to alter texts to fit the music. As with any loophole this was abused to justify changes such as you note where the words no longer reflect any significant part of the original.

I think that loophole was nailed shut several years back. However, communication speed seems to depend on how welcome the message is.

In the Air Force there are many Military Standards for fabrication of things. We added our own MIL-TDP- 41 [Make It Like The Danged Print For Once]. We need something similar for liturgical texts. 😦

Well they are a catholic musician!!! If they cant do it without a missal in front of them, then they NEED TO GET a missal in front of them.

there is no excuses for things like this, no matter who lead it.

OK, so it I have a copy of the Roman Missal in front of me while cantoring I’ll have the words but unless it’s the chant version in the book, I won’t have the music. In my entire life, I’ve never had a copy of the missal in front of me. I’m not the priest. He has one, he needs it. I do not.

I agree that the correct words should be used. But to assume that everyone has a copy of the Roman Missal (usually a red book, the one the priest uses) is absurd. Whatever books the congregation has for their use almost certainly won’t be printed in 2 colors of ink.

So no, they DON’T NEED TO GET a missal in front of them at all!

no, i was just trying to make a point. my point was that the mass ordinaries need to follow the missal, word for word. One way to do that is get a missal in front of you. another is to sing quality ordinaries.

That removes the emphasis of the sacrifice of the Mass at a very important part of the Mass, and it places an emphasis on the community.
