Biography book suggestions?

Ahhh…St. Edith Stein - thanks for reminding me of that name, Cyril, and for the specific book suggestion by Hill. Also thanks for the St. Manuel title and author. Had not known of him! Much appreciated. God’s blessings to you always. Sure wish I had time to read all these great recommendations as soon as possible!
 
Regarding the book, “Saint Manuel, Martyr,” I went on amazon.com, thinking I probably would purchase it there, and found that the blurb for this book on amazon.com says, unfortunately, that it is about a man who sees faith is an illusion, fending off the truth that only brotherhood and nature in this world counts, and that there is no otherworldly eternity. I presume though that this book suggestion is an honest mistake.

I second the suggestion of The Shadow of His Wings: The True Story of Fr. Gereon Goldmann, OFM. It really is an incredible story of how a German seminarian who was drafted into Hitler’s SS and how he was able to complete his training to be a priest, and minister to German soldiers and civilians in secret.

The Autobiography of a Hunted Priest by Father John Garard. Father John Garard was a Jesuit priest in England during the time of Catholic persecution in Elizabethan times, the 1500’s. In the midst of being hunted by authorities for being a priest. He still actively served as a priest in secret and was able to actively minister to the laity who were also practicing their faith in secret. He also gained the conversion of protestants. Eventually he was captured, tortured, and imprisoned in the tower of London. After several years he escaped and went back to his ministry.

The Gift of Peace by Joseph Cardinal Bernadin. It does not meet the criteria in your OP exactly, but I thought it was a good read. It is not as theologically, philosophically, or psychologically dense as some other stuff I have read or am attempting to work through, so I found it to be a very nice change of pace. It is the personal reflections of Cardinal Bernadin from the last few years of his life, starting with the false allegations of sexual abuse made against him. He finished it 13 days before he died from pancreatic cancer.

Thanks, Cyril! I just Googled it after I saw your post, and it sounds very interesting. I had no idea about one of the miracles attributed to St. James of the woman’s son who had been hanged and came back to life. Wow! God’s awesome blessings to you.
