I’m at a loss for words. Is this right? It seems like these people are trying to play God. Could we get a clergyman to comment on this?
We’ve had a huge amount of advances in prosthetic limbs in the past couple of decades. Would you think that a veteran who had arms or legs blown off should be denied the latest and greatest technology?

We’ve had artificial organs, again, for many years. Remember the Jarvis Heart (from the early 80s)? Rush Limbaugh has a cochlear implant (provides artificial hearing capability for one who is totally deaf). That is actually fairly common now. While I don’t think that they’ve been shrunk small enough for implantation, there are heart-lung machines that perform oxygenation of the blood (artificial lung) and, of course, there is dialysis (artificial kidney) to remove waste.

If you’d like to talk about an artificial soul, then, well, that’s a different issue altogether. The difference being between a “bionic man” and an android.

Why?
Is this right?
What is wrong with prosthesis? Prosthetics are not new, and the Church has no teaching against utilizing technology to correct defects and assist those who have had amputations. Science used at the service of man is not wrong.

Seems to me they are trying to help the disabled live more independently. Nothing wrong with that.

Why do you need clergy to comment?

I think Bionic Man is just a dramatic title - nothing more. Prosthetics and other artificial aids have been around for a while and others are in development. Some people are alive because they have a pacemaker for their heart. So, no playing God here.

Peace,
Ed
