You know, this reminds me of a conversation I heard while walking around in the mall. A woman was asking a man where he was planning to get married. He gave the name of a local Lutheran church. Her reply?

“That Papist church?”

I wonder what Luther would have done if he heard that.

Episcopalian here, I really enjoy posting at CAF and am have enjoyed the conversations here. However, if you think the CARM Catholic forum is bad, stay away from the Anglican/Episcopal section!

Evangelicals say we’re too Catholic; Catholics say we’re too protestant; Lutherans nibble each other to death over every jot and tittle of practice and doctrine; and the Orthodox position seems to be “Frankly my dear…”

But yes, over at CARM, Lutherans are mostly tossed in the same bucket with Catholics.

No, no - not you! But I saw this expressed by an Orthodox, charmingly, as “Protestant Reformation? Not our dish to wash.”

It rather startled me- and after consideration I “got” it.

I was just struck by how many Lutherans are regular posters here at CAF; and there are a goodly number of Orthodox and Episcopalians, too. I always like reading what Itwin and dronald post - but with all the different denominations under the umbrella of “protestantism” you would expect to see a larger variety of non-Catholics.

Is it because we find common ground in the creeds & liturgy that we “flock together?” Maybe I need to peek over at CARM and see who is hanging out there. Surely CAF has some “big data” available on who visits the non-Catholic threads; it would be interesting to know (not individual posters, but just their self-identified religion).

I see that I am not the only one who noticed that non-Catholic Christians on CAF as a whole are mostly of the liturgically oriented variety (I rarely visit the NCR thread). Or maybe it is because I hang out mostly in the threads where these Christians are likely to hang out (Eastern Catholics, Traditional Catholics, Liturgy, etc.)

Speaking for myself, I find it more fascinating to watch interactions among the liturgical Christians (especially Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Assyrian CofE, etc.). Baptists, Evangelicals…these I can barely relate to, and I mean no offense to them. For us Catholics, however, the Eucharist (Divine Liturgy, Mass, Qurbono, etc.) is the central act of prayer in our lives, so I can relate to Christians with similar worship better.

I think that is because the Reformation is a Western phenomenon. There was no Reformation in the east.

Yes you make a fair point about the East never having splintered like the West did with the “Protestant Reformation”. And, for that matter, I also have to give you guys credit for (re)establishing good relations with the Oriental Orthodox, to a greater extend than we Catholics have.

Getting rid of the “drama” was what we were striving for several years ago on NCRs. We have many non-liturical Protestants here who have no problem following the rules and can debate with Catholics or anyone else until thier fingers bleed. We only ask that they follow simple rules of debate.
