My husband and I are practicing Catholics. I have been battling health problems and infertility. I was recently told by my physician that I am NOT to get pregnant, due to concerns with my life and the baby’s life. I do not know my cycles (NFP is not easy for us) so my doctor suggested a barrier method. I am against the use of condoms and birth control, but I don’t want to risk my life by possibly becoming pregnant. I want to strengthen my bond and vows with my husband in a natural way, but we are unsure how to go about it. Right now, we are practicing abstinence, but I don’t want to spend the next 20 years doing this. Are there any faithful ways that we can prevent pregnancy without knowing my cycles?

you can practice modern NFP methods along with the superior methods of ovulation prediction now available, and do so with initial and ongoing instruction and support from those experienced in the methods. or you can abstain completely. Or 3 you can trust in God to take care of you and any baby no matter what happens, in his good judgement. Yes it can be difficult for some couples, but the methods have come such a long way, now that the ovulation predictors are available that cyclical problems are no longer the problem they once were (like in my day).

This is a dilemma, I have struggled with something similar. NFP CAN be very effective if used properly. The problem is that most people don’t know how to use it to it’s fullest extent. Charting your cycles is only part of the puzzle, and doesn’t really work well for me either. There is an organization called Couples 2 Couples, and I don’t know much about them other than they teach NFP to other couples. It can be as effective as other methods, you check the consistency of your mucus every single morning. You will also take your basal body temperature and abstain on your ‘dangerous’ days. To get more specific information, try to get in touch with a group that teaches NFP. It’s not Roman Roulette anymore, it’s come a long way 👍 I was told a pregnancy would be very dangerous as well, I had an ectopic pregnancy many years ago and lost half of my reproductive system. (One tube, one ovary, and part of my uterus). My daughter was a shock pregnancy, since

We belong to the Couple to Couple League. We do the basal temp and mucous charting, etc. My problem is there is no change in basal temp (96.3-96.7 every day) and no change in consistency of mucous. Didn’t know if there was something that allowed us to not have to abstain. Thanks for the help!!🙂

I’m told the Marquette Method is very effective for these cases. It tests a urine sample every day for fertility hormones, so there’s no worries about temperature or mucus. But maybe someone from the Family Life forum might have better information for you.
