Birth Control for Medical Problems?

I have a question that perhaps you all could help me with.

I have two chronic illnesses (one of which I do not have a definitive diagnosis for yet) and both are made worse by my period. One is just a mild worsening, something I can deal with. The other one… There is a severe worsening of symptoms that time of the month, it soemtimes makes it very hard for me to teach because the pain is so great I can’t even stand up straight. My doctor has talked about the possiblity of Seasonale to help minimize the symptoms. I am not married nor am I sexually active in any way. This would be striclty a medical intervention which I’m pretty sure the church has no problem with, right?

What about after marriage? My hope would be not to be on it for long, just until we get this beast diagnosed and a proper treatment. I do want to have a large family if that is what God has planned and do hold firmly to the Church’s beliefs on contraception as i understand them. But what is the church’s stance when contraception is used not as birth control but as a treatment for a disease, both within and the confines of marriag and without?

First of all, if you are using hormone pills, shots, patches, etc. to treat a medical condition when you aren’t even sexually active then you are not really taking “birth control”. And it is possible to take such medicines licitly.

But that said…

In most cases you would be better served to work with a physician who will tackle the root cause of your symptoms rather than merely covering them up. We can’t give medical advice here but there are several threads here that discuss this very topic. You might want to try a search.

I have a wonderful doctor who is not trying to merely cover up the symptoms, just make them more livable until a diagnosis has been made (we are in the process of testing right now but it’s a long road).

I have PCOS doesn’t seem like a big problem but it is especially when you are not normal, are having problems as if you are premenopausal, etc…I was told that bcp are the most effective way to help with PCOS and regulate your body…I had come in here to ask for advise even if I use it for that not for actual bc, was told to seek other medical help…

I too am open to life and more than happy to when the time comes for marriage, etc…BUT I was advised against it and therefore I am living with the problem still…I didn’t want to be damned more than what I must be or will be that’s for sure, and then adding bcp to the picture even if it was for health issues…

I would use it at least for a short while to make life bearable-especially if your life is in that much danger, at least temporarily until you have a diagnostic or result of some sort from all of your tests, and as soon as you know just stop even if it’s before marriage that way you don’t continue using them at all, but I am sure someone will tell you to seek better doctor’s or some other, better specialist…

Again it’s your choice, as for me I don’t regret not taking them, even though life is pretty difficult and trying to figure out how to normalize myself, without much help, when you don’t have private insurance believe me the help is nowhere to be found and you just live with what you have and can figure out on your own…But if you have a doctor there to help you then maybe you could just hold off and wait until they have a result from your tests and you can start treatment…Hopefully things shouldn’t get worst instead better for you!
