How can I explain why birth control is wrong but NFP is OK if you have a good reason? My grandma will not believe me and I need a good way to explain it. I am kinda confused myself.

Plus she said that all the bishops in this country said that we should stop fighting contraception. I never heard this before and I am confused.:(

Please Help!

There’s lots of threads on this, but basically NFP takes no action against conception. All other forms of birth control are such that the couple takes an action that is against conception (life) i.e. contra-ception.

As far as the bishop statement is concerned, that is incorrect.

because with contraception, you have two people preform an act of self-giving, but hinder the natural purpose of their act, which is the conception of children, and which is the ultimate purpose for why God created sexuality, sexual union is a gift from God to the married, but by practicing contraception, married couples are accepting the pleasure God built into the act and yet denying Him its purpose, they are in effect mocking God, but remember that “God is not mocked.” (Gal. 6:7). Christ cursed the fig tree which, despite a fine external appearance, bore no fruit (Matt. 21:19; Mark 11:14). Marriage is God’s plan for populating Heaven, but those who use contraception refuse Him the specific fruit of their marriage, which is children, when they engage in the act which should produce children yet frustrate the natural, God-intended result…

and the Bishops do not say that, although if any do they are being disobedient to the church, but what Pope Pius XI has said about contraception is - “Since therefore, openly departing from the uninterrupted Christian tradition, some recently have judged it possible to declare another doctrine regarding this question, the Catholic Church, to whom God has entrusted the defense of the integrity and purity or morals…through our mouth proclaims anew: Any use whatsoever of matrimony exercised in such a way that the act is deliberately frustrated in its natural power to generate life is an offense against the law of God and of nature; and those who indulge in it are branded with the guilt of grave sin.”

if your grandmother won’t listen to reason or doctrine or even the popes, then all you can do is pray for her, although that’s what you must do first and foremost, before you even try to speak with her, because only God can really open her heart or mind to the truth, so never neglect to pray first,
and yet, if all your efforts fail at this time, just continue praying for her, especially the rosary, because you never know what great help in will afford her, either in this life or the next.

alright, hope this helps, take care.

What do you mean OTHER forms of birth control. Are you saying that NFP is birth control?

Mikayla

ALL Christian churches opposed birth control until 1930 when the Anglican church approved of its use. Again we see a splintering of Church teachings. We can either follow what has been from the beginning or follow some person’s idea and those who follow that person. You will receive other theological teachings from others here as you have already seen. And I concur with those teachings and I thought that this additional information would have some bearing on whether or not one can be Christian and use birth control.

Where did your grandma get this information? You never heard it before because it is not true. We have to be VERY careful when we say that ALL bishops agree to a dissention in the Church. That should be a HUGE red flag… teachccd

Birth control or family planning is not necessarily wrong. It is artificial contraception that is wrong. You want to study up on this.

NFP is a type of birth control. Any family planning is an attempt at birth control. It just isn’t a contraceptive. A contraceptive does something to the marital act rendering it infertile. NFP doesn’t do anything to the marital act. NFP naturally utilizes knowledge of God’s creation of the male and female reproductive system . It draws upon the graces and gifts of marriage. The couple united with the Holy Trinity work together to discern what the family size will be.

pray for Gods will to lead you to the right decision…NFP is Gods planned parenthood as long as it is used wisely for the right outcome…

Yes, NFP is a morally acceptable method of controling when one has children. It is, however, significantly different than artificial birth control.

I’m using “birth control” in it’s broadest sense.

Excellent resources. 👍

The simplist way I ever heard it explained (and I don’t remember who said it).

There is conception, non-conception, and contraception.

Conception = pregnancy. This is the way we were made by God.

Non-conception does not equal pregnancy but doesn’t act to prevent conception either. This is not wrong it includes any day (or hour) a couple choses not to have sex. It also includes times of infertility, post menopausal sex, sterlity, etc. No problem.

Contraception does not equal pregnancy **and **achieves this by a **act **against the way the body was made.

Birth control is indeed wrong. I recently quit using it myself. I am deeply ashamed of the fact that I did use it.

Birth control can be abortifacient and often is. I think all forms of hormonal birth control have the possibility of being abortifacient. Even some non-hormonal types have that capability I believe.

Birth control also has many side effects such as:

  1. *]Pulmonary Embolism (blood clot in the lungs which can be fatal)
    *]Bone loss
    *]Increased breast cancer risk
    *]Depression and Suicidal thoughts
    *]Uterine perforation
    *]Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
    *]Decreased Sex Drive
    *]High Blood Pressure
    *]Stroke
    *]Weight Gain
    *]Migraines
    *]Permanent Infertility

Note that not all people who use birth control will get these side effects but they are definitely possibilities. Some of them are more common than others.
