I am a Catholic teen who was recently put on birth control. This was a decision I made because I have extremely painful periods and they are also irregular. I know the Catholic stance on birth control if you are married. However I am not having sex nor do I plan to before marriage. I plan to get off the pills once I am married. Am I committing a sin? Are Birth control pills always bad?

No sin. You are taking the pills for a medical condition, not for a contraceptive purpose.

Yup, it’s fine. You’re taking it for medical purposes, not contraception.

You are on them for medical reasons, not for contraception. No sin involved. In your case the contraception is a side effect of medical treatment, not the primary purpose of the pill.

You are not committing a sin as long as you are not sexually active it is simply medication.

The Church does not teach that “birth control pills” are a sin. Those pills are simply synthetic hormones in pill form.

The Church teaches contraception is grave matter, a sin. That is a specific act during marital intimacy, regardless of method used.

You are taking hormonal pills for a legitimate medical reason,’and could do so whether married or not.

I encourage you to talk over moral questions of sexuality with your parents in the future.

It wouldn’t matter if the OP were, there would still be no sin or contraception (obviously in this particular situation there would be other sins, but if married there would be no sin involved).

The point is, the princlple of double effect is the appropriate moral framework to apply here.

No inanimate thing is sinful in and of itself–it is how we choose to use them that matters. For example, it is sinful to use a knife to attack someone, but it is not sinful to use a knife to cut your food. Likewise, using a particular medication to frustrate conception is sinful, but using it to treat an actual disorder is fine.
