As a Catholic in a predominately protestant state (we are 2 percent of the general population) I get asked repeatedly why Catholics don’t support artificial birth control. Now my brother, who is not Catholic, has said after his third child he is getting sterilized!!! I begged him not to do it until I can offer some information against it. He has agreed. That said, I heard some time ago there was a Catholic Bishop, I believe in Florida in the 1960’s that wrote an essay on what he predicted the eventual outcome of artifical birth control would be upon society. Among his predictions, it was told to me, was the collapse of the American family (think gay marriage); the sexualization of children (one google search and you’ll never leave your closet) and the decline of population. ALL of his predictions have now come to fruition!!! The problem is I don’t know who wrote the essay or where I can get a copy. I believe my brother, as well as many others, would be persuaded by the essay. Anyone have any idea what essay I am referencing or where I can find a copy of it? I was told it was a Bishop in Florida. Maybe not. Anyway, ANY help will be greatly appreciated!! God bless!!🙂

Not sure if this is what you’re referring to, but in 1968 Pope Paul VI issued an encyclical called Humanae Vitae that predicted the widespread moral decline and the loss of respect for women should contraception become widespread. You can find the document on the vatican website. Janet Smith, a Catholic theologian, has also written about it here: nd.edu/~afreddos/courses/264/popepaul.htm

Christopher West also writes extensively about the dangers of contraception. Your brother may find one of his books informative or persuasive.

Then, I suggest you get information from www.omsoul.com on contraception and natural family planning. They also have several testimonials of those who have reversed their sterilizations.

And, especially the book The Bible And Birth Control by Charles Provan. He is a non-Catholic, and his analysis is very good. It’s not a very long book.

That would have been Pope Paul VI’s Papal Encyclical Humanae Vitae. You can find it on the Vatican website, you can purchase it in booklet form at Catholic bookstores.

Dr. Janet Smith gives an excellent talk on this topic, outlining how Pope Paul VI’s assessment has come to pass-- it’s called* Contraception: Why Not?* and it is available from www.omsoul.com and you can even get one copy for free.

I heard Dr. Charles Rice speak on this topic once when discussing the Natural Law.

He shared this thought: Tonight, in a hospital near you, a little baby is going to be born. The life of this baby began about nine months ago. One day, that hospital won’t exist any longer. Neither will the city, state, country, and probably the earth. They will all be gone. But that little baby will still be alive in eternity. What the contracepting couple are, in effect, telling God is, “By this sexual act, it MAY be your will that we cooperate with you to create a person who will live forever. That may be Your will. But we won’t let you do it!” That’s an incredible thing to be telling the God of the universe! And, it’s an incredible sin for that purpose.

God is the author of life. It is for Him to say when life begins, and when it ends. When man tries to usurp God’s authority, he descends into the slavery of sin through his pride. It is always and everywhere wrong to equate ones self with God, but it is just SO common in our day. It really is.

Is your brother a Christian? If he is, you might ask him why he wants to alter his body from the way God designed humanity. Does he think he knows better than God how human sexuality should function?
