What are your guys views on birth control decline in the catholic church? Why doesnt the church allow it? I am not against it but I am suprised because so many catholics use birth control. God bless you all. šŸ™‚

My reasons for being against birth control are as follows. It doesn’t work. Some forms of it are dangerous and I’m not willing to poison myself and give myself breast cancer so I can be perpetually sexually available. Contraception is contrary to my vocation as a wife. Contraception is a barrier between my husband and myself. NFP is just as effective and has no side effects.

NFP? whats that, I am unmaried but later in my life I am going to be married ihope so at this moment i am just wondering honestly

Not sure what you mean by this.
Why doesnt the church allow it?
The Church cannot allow what God forbids. Contraception is a sin against the sixth commandment.

Note: ā€œBirth controlā€ which is simply the spacing of children is not against Church teaching. Achieving spacing of children through contraception is. One may achieve spacing through periodic abstinence. That is natural family planning (NFP).

Hello, sorry I cannot help right now, but may I ask what your age is?

I should also point out that many of the statistics are flawed.

I am an unmarried, chaste woman who uses ā€œbirth controlā€ pills to control medical problems. This is fully in accord with Catholic teaching - I am taking medicine to control a medical problem, not trying to prevent pregnancy. Yet many of the statistics would include women like me in the list of Catholic women using birth control. The most common I don’t think does that but does rely on what women have ever used - and actually didn’t add up entirely to what it said anyways.

(Referring to the 98% study that was popular for a while - it said only 2% of Catholic women said NFP was the only method that they had ever used to prevent pregnancy. Ignoring 11% that said they had never attempted to prevent pregnancy in any way.)

oh I am not to sure about that, I was just wondering for intentional birth control concerning pregnancy

well actually wait, my mom just said, and she is catholic, she said the NFP method works badly and she just used birth control, I am thinking about just having my wife on birth control despite it being unnatural, I mean I am not going against the church, I would never want to do that but its just unneccesarily tedious and chancey for the NFP method, I dont want like 8 kids like my grandmother had.

My opinion might be extreme, but I’m against birth control because it seems like everyone just needs sex 24/7 and has to use it to prevent children in order to fulfill their sexual desires.

Please note this isn’t my entire view, just one of my extreme reasons why.

Being closed to having children is a diriment impediment to marriage. This means it will make your marriage invalid from the start. I would suggest that you re-evaluate your views on marriage and child-rearing before you date anyone and ask yourself if you are really ready for marriage as it has been ordained by God and taught by the Church. Also, putting your wife on artificial birth control IS ā€œgoing against the Churchā€ because the Church clearly teaches that artificial birth control is an intrinsic evil.

I suggest that you read Humanae Vitae and Theology of the Body in order to directly grasp how the Church teaches against artificial birth control. For an overview of how the Church sees marriage, try Casti Connubii and the Book of Revelation in the Bible.

Well birth control does work, but it is highly dangerous. Aside from causing cancer the pill is notorious for causing women to form blood clots and they often die from them. I had to use the pill for medical reasons (never been sexually active) and it made me so sick within 12 weeks they had to try a different treatment for my health issue at the time.

All this said, I do have say that people are driven by many things to use the pill or other forms of birth control. They fear they can’t afford more than one or two children, that they can’t handle raising more than one or two kids emotionally or physically and in some cases they simply don’t want children. Where the Church could help in these issues is by being more supportive to families, and no she is not supportive enough.

Had I married I would have loved to have a dozen children (God willing) but I know I would have found it difficult if I felt I could not provide for their basic needs. I do feel there is a tremendous gap in recognizing that concern for people and the Church. Of course we are supposed to trust God and the use of NFP is intended to address issues of family size. But when it fails (and it does), how does the individuals parish really help them deal with this?

True True, but what I mean is that I would have my wife on birth control and if my desires or hers ever arroused to make love we would do so, i dont mean 24/7 but you get the idea, I was also thinking of a Visectamine later after I have kids as well, but ya. Its a complicated arguement which in my opinion wont condemn us if we use NFP or Birth Control but god would turn towards NFP probably because its a natural way of it but again its very chancey, But just keep in mind god is rich in mercy and he cares whats in our hearts basically and he just wants us to love each other in a way where we would see the beauty of our spouses bodies, Thats my (name removed by moderator)ut at least…

God is also rich in justice and will consign you to Hell if you choose to turn away from Him through the sins of sterilization or artificial contraception.

God wouldn’t do that, that would mean he would condemn all the other dedicated devoted christians for using birth control, yes this doctorine i realize is artificial hormones but god wouldn’t condemn someone to hell for that… :/, his mercy, especially for his body which is the church is so great that he gives us two ways for us to control ourselves from having vast numbers of babies, birth control which he gave to us as an artificial method and NFP, which is the natural way, he gave us two blessed choices for which we can control our sexual maritial lives, its not a reason we should go to hell, he just knew we would need that sooner or later, I mean what would you perfer to use NFP and maybe have that lead to an abortion, god forbid! If i have lets say 2 kids and i dont want another because I am not prepared for it I would see birth control as the most easiest option, God bless you sir your answers were very prominent and well, but I just have to be reasonable in this subject… 😦

Largely it is based upon the notion of natural law. We should not muck with God’s design, but rather discern moral laws from the designs we observe in the world around us and within our bodies.

Sex is thus viewed as having two primary purposes that are intimately linked together. These two purposes instill a full view of what we define as marriage. If we upgraded our vocabularly and spoke more like secular people, we could say that those who engage in sexual contact without marriage are not fully consenting and thus are sinning.

In light of contraceptives, we aren’t to fear the makeup of the body or view the aspects of the act that creates another human being – that is the crown of God’s creation, something made in the image and likeness of God. We are rather to see that to contracept is as morally disordered as taking pills or intentionally trying to make sex as joyless and uncomfortable and impersonable as possible.

The fruits of sex are children and unity between spouses, and these two purposes/fruits ought to be respected and honored. This thus means that we have to weigh our needs and sacrifice rather than risk destroying the dignity of one of the aspects over the other.

In fact, I would argue that the historic tendency to be prudish stems from embracing the letter of the law (that we are to not reject the notion that sex is primarily about procreation) while then allowing our negative attitude toward procreation seep into our attitudes toward pleasure. In this vein, pleasure is then viewed as too good, something only tempered by the suffering of raising children.

That is not the Catholic view we are to have. We are to lift up and change our attitude about the procreative meaning and thus affirm both.

Do you know how the pill works?
It does 2 things. It suppresses ovulation. The drug companies found that there were health problems if the dosage was too high so they tried to have the smallest dosage but still be effective. This allowed for the occasion ovulation but the other effect of the pill was to make the lining of the uterus inhospitable to the fertilized egg so the fertilized egg would be lost in the women’s period. We understand that a fertilized egg is a distinct human person with it’s own DNA code so it is an early abortion. Would you like to come before God to answer for the early abortions that happened?

NFP is fertility awareness. There are symptoms a woman can watch to determine when she is fertile and when that time of fertility has passed. It is information. If your mother didn’t like it, it’s because taking a pill every day is easier and as you can see with yourself, we all like to make life easier for ourselves. Being faithful to God requires effort but God sees our efforts and strengthens us, helps us. You cannot say at your age that you will want 2 children because you have time to grow in the grace and love of God. You are learning how to be an adult and make decisions for yourself. Will you choose to follow God’s commandments today? Yes. Tomorrow? Yes. We all walk one day at a time and you don’t know what God will ask of you tomorrow, or even how many tomorrows you will have. Be faithful today and walk with God. Your tomorrows will come soon enough, do not tie God’s hands by saying No to him today when it’s not even a decision to be made today.

May God increase your faithfulness, and mine as well!
