Today’s my birthday. Is it OK to take a break from giving things up for lent, just for today? Two of my daughters have birthdays in lent too, how about those days?

Interesting question, my birthday often falls in Lent and I never know what to do - as for children, I don’t think you can deprive them of a celebration, that would be most unfair on them.

My daughter, my two neices, myself and my sister have birthdays that always fall during Lent.

We just always celebrate the birthdays on the closest Sunday. 😃

True American Catholic spirit (a la USCCB).

I have a Lent b-day as well, but seeing as how I’ve not given up alcohol, I’m just going to have a nice relaxing evening with some wine, etc. Nearest Sunday is a good idea, though.

I too have a Birthday that will always fall during Lent. I do have the privelage though of it being a Feast Day as well - it is the Feast of the Annunciation so, unless my birthday falls on Good Friday (or any day during the Easter Tridium or Holy Week for that matter) I get to celebrate it just like it was a Sunday 😃 .

The reason I can do this is a Feast Day always outweighs in importance a “Fast Day” or day of penitance.

Last year was a bit difficult in a way because it was the first time I ever remember that my Birthday fell on Good Friday and the Feast of the Annunciation was moved into the first week of April!

Anyway, all birthdays are “little feast days” and should be celebrated whether they fall during Lent or like mine, have the privelage of being on a Church recognized Feast Day.

My birthday is on Friday. I do not eat dessert on Fridays during Lent. What I will do this year is abstain from dessert the day before, so I can enjoy some birthday cake.😉

You can substitute whatever it is that you are giving up during Lent for a work of mercy.

Only be careful not to scandalize anyone. If, for instance, you throw a party on a Friday, do not serve meat, because you would give the impression that you do not care about Lent and also you would also put your guests in the uncomfortable position of having to break their Lent abstinence or else go hungry!:bigyikes:

Remember God prefers love to sacrifice ❤️

and have a very Happy Birthday!!:dancing:

giving something up for lent other than for fast and abstinence days are optional. if it’s your birthday i wouldn’t worry about it.

Birthday has fallen in Lent every year. I usually just get things that don’t involve what I’ve given up. My family doesn’t hold with being able to have them on Sundays, because having something every week isn’t much of a sacrifice. Like this year I gave up chocolate, so I had vanilla ice cream and a carrot cake (at my mom’s) and a cheesecake (at my dad’s).

My younger daughter’s birthday always falls in Lent.

When she was seven, she decided to give up ice cream for Lent. About two weeks into the season, she suddenly realized this would include her birthday. You would not believe how she cried, no matter how many times I told her it would be okay to have it.

I finally took her to see the priest, after Mass. He told her that Jesus *wanted *her to have ice cream on her birthday.

I gave up sweets for Lent, but I still had cake and ice cream on her birthday this year.

I remember back when we had to abstain every Friday. My grandparents’ 50th anniversary happened to fall on a Friday. They got a special dispensation to serve meat at the party.

Go ahead and celebrate those birthdays!

In this case it is good to move it to Sunday. What a great sacrifice that has been given that you can’t celebrate your birthday on the actual day.

Did you post the above in 2017 (this year)? Easter 2016 was March 27.

March 25 USUALLY falls in Lent. However, it did not in 2008 (Easter was on March 23 that year, with earliest possible Easter being March 22).

As for birthday in Lent, I see there is no church teaching about the celebration. If it bothers you to have celebration on that day, move it to another day, but don’t leave yourself shortchanged w/r to birthdays at other times of the year. I have a summer birthday, and I wrote a long set of notes about birthdays in an introduction to a Facebook photo album; email me at carlm0404@gmail.com for more information about those notes.
