the only way to defeat poverty is to make the rates job creation equal or greater than the rate of population growth. the former is the responsibility of the government. the latter is the responsibility of individual families. both must work together.

but the philippine government could not keep up with the growing population. more and more are becoming unemployed. more and more are living below poverty. thus more and more are resorting to crime & corruption. which in turn damages job creation.
There is no connection between population growth and poverty. As much as your opinions make sense there is no evidence to support it. In fact there is evidence to the contrary. More people, in a properly functioning ecomomy should mean more need for services, not just a continual drain on society.

take note:
Will the Philippine boom continue? Not without further deep economic reform. At a fundamental level, the Philippine economy is dysfunctional and doesn’t produce enough jobs.

that ‘boom’ means ‘a little better’, but still not good enough.
Right and good economic reform does not state that we need population control to achieve the outcome that we desire.

I was just making sense of your argument about free trade, or jobs. If im not mistaken your answer is to poverty is to make more jobs, right?

It would seem like the best solution would be to euthanize all the Children of Poor people. That would make them all wealthy overnight and they would not have to change their culture to have less children. The could even follow Jonathan Swifts advice and eat the children after they are euthanized. a definite win win situation that i am sure even Agno theist would agree with.
sounds like a reasonable proposal to me!

If by ‘make’ you mean that the government steps in to subsidize or create jobs, than not really. I actually mean that government needs to take a lesser role. One example would be government regulations on new and small businesses. If government steps back and removes the red tape then new businesses will pop up-basically anyone who wants to can start something. Now this also means that many businesses will fail, but the efficent businesses and the businesses that produce something of value or need will prosper and the market will flush out the ones that don’t. This eventually builds on itself and the market as a whole thrives.

thats what i had in mind. its up to the government to make conditions that would encourage the creation of more jobs. right?

Now poverty is when large amounts of the population are unemployed and *underemployed that living conditions begins to deteriorate.
  • underemployed -like engineering graduates who cant get engineering jobs and instead must settle as low-earning laborers.

I can see where you are trying to take this, but what I am saying is that a smaller population does not create more jobs.

Oh and P.S. I have my BS in business, so you can assume that I understand business terms.

i had no idea i was using business terms. 😃

you are right- a smaller population does not create more jobs. i was just saying that the rate of job creation should closely match the rate of population growth. look at the picture of that family again. i’m saying that before you add another child, first make sure you can give it a good life. be responsible. i’m sure the kid’s soul wont mind waiting in god’s hand a little bit longer until living conditions become acceptable. 🙂

Well, on the other hand if the new Filipino president continues to get it right and economic growth expands at the rate of potential because of the large population you could find that the country is having to outsource to fill the void if there is a constriction on the workforce. Many people are angry that work is being exported from this country…
A perfect example of lessening of government regulation leading to economic boom is Hong Kong.

Something else to consider is what is responsibility? We in this country now value having smaller families in order to provide more. Where does it stop. What made me start thinking of this is when my general doctor told me that I didn’t need to have more kids becasue they are expensive and two is enough. That would be responsible. I almost knocked her out. I have a degree in business and my husband is a CPA with a Masters in Tax (wants his PhD next) and this woman who has a medical degree is lecturing me on financial responsibility. The pengelum could easily swing in the other direction with unforseen results.
I now have three kids and a new doctor.

While it is noble to want the best conditions for children, something to remember is they don’t need much. If we continue to move toward free markets there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I think this is an excellent point. Too many people mistakenly think that “the government makes jobs”, which is not really how it works.

theres always an exception to everything. anything is possible. but it wouldnt hurt to play safe.

who’s angry? certainly not us filipinos. nearly everyone of us dreams of going abroad and getting the good life that we cant get at home.

an exception to the rule, thanks to british control & trade.

except for daycare. $500 per child per month. you are lucky you make a lot of money. you should have more kids. really. 🙂

Daycare is $500.00/month per kid in the Philippines? Heck, I know a few Filipina nannies here in Canada who willingly work for room, board, and spending money! Maybe they should have stayed home … 😉
