In a letter to Sen. Robert P. Casey, Bishop Joseph F. Martino condemned the vote taken by Sen. Casey against an amendment to a bill which would have prohibited millions of U.S. tax dollars from going to organizations abroad that provide and promote abortion.

The Martinez Amendment to the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) would have reinstated the Mexico City Policy rescinded by President Obama on Jan. 23. The amendment was defeated in a vote of 60-37.

I am glad that Bishop Martino is speaking out on this. I hope more U.S. bishops will speak out when Catholic politicians in their own dioceses directly support pro-abortion legislation. Catholic constitutents should also speak out.

I have great admiration for Bishop Martino, right up there with Chaput, Finn, Hermann, Archbishop Burke and others who spoke out for Church teachings before the election. These leaders of the Church and others like them who aren’t afraid of politicos and aren’t in a popularity contest will be among those who pull the Church back together here in the U.S.
