I think the letter was well thought out, made many good points and has been a long time coming. There have been too many abuses in this area. BTW he is my bishop.

I think this is a good decision.
I see no need for Communion outside of Mass unless the people are somehow unable to go to Sunday Mass (i.e. home bound, prisoners, etc.).

One ridiculous reason and then one good reason, from the article:
“Schools such as Chaminade and Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale say they conduct the brief Communion services because they lack the time to celebrate a Mass amid classes. Some schools also lack priests to celebrate Mass.”
BTW, I hope that they realize that one is not obligated to receive communion, even during a Mass!

From what I hear that is the coming policy in many dioceses. Communion services in the Church will be limited to Sundays when there is no priest available.

I think it makes a good deal of sense.
I particularly agree with the idea of the laity gathering to say the liturgy of the hours or perhaps the liturgy of the word from that day’s mass.
There is definitely something missing at a communion service. Sort of like going to a funeral where the body has been donated to science.

Yes, the Liturgy of the Hours would lend itself very well to this kind of situation. Celebrate Morning Prayer first thing in the morning instead a Communion Service at Lunch.

I have always said that Communion services are for Sundays when no priest is available to offer Mass and the community has gathered together. Daily Mass, is not an obligation, however when available we should take advantage of it. Those who wish can participate in the Churches daily Liturgy by praying the Divine Office together either in the morning or evening, or both!

**There was a time when receiving Communion outside Mass was quite normal. Thomas Merton refers to this in SEVEN STORY MOUNTAIN.
This accounts for the “double Confiteor” in the OF–the Order for Communion Outside of Mass got transferred to within mass.**

Then have the priest celebrate two in one day, or on a different time schedule during the week. You’re right, that’s ridiculous.Some schools also lack priests to celebrate Mass.”
BTW, I hope that they realize that one is not obligated to receive communion, even during a Mass!Aw gee, I mean, it’s being offered, and we wouldn’t want to be impolite or rude!

I’m not particularly fond of the “Eucharistic prayer services” myself, though they’re still allowed in my diocese. I’ve found that some lay people take it as an opportunity to “play priest” and put their own spin on the liturgy.
I think I’ll stick with a regular priest-led Mass.

Counterproductive. High school students are very busy in and out school. I am glad they were allowed a lunchtime communion service as it is inferred a daily mass would not fit in the schedule. The communion services should continue.

Daily Mass needs to be made a priority in all Catholic schools. It should be the first thing that happens in the mornings.
Our Lady of Atonement Academy does it, why doesn’t every other Catholic high school?
Schedules should be changed accordingly to meet the spiritual needs of the students, not just the academic.

If Mass doesn’t fit the schedule, change the schedule.
When I was a boy we had a ex-military chaplain as a parochial vicar, who would do Sunday Mass in 25 mins.
A daily Mass can take 15 mins. Skip the hymns, say the Psalm aloud, 3 min homily, voila.

It does not happen at all schools because not all the students are Catholic. I see the Communion Services as a way for those who want it can receive it without alienating any non-Catholics who attend just for the education.

Eek…I would disagree with you here.
Having mass at a Catholic school makes sense. If you aren’t Catholic and your kids go to Catholic school…you know what you’re getting them into.

Then drop all pretensions and just say that this “Catholic” school is nothing more than a public school that charge$ big buck$ tuition…
And don’t forget to change the name on the sign.

The schools in question do not admit non-Catholics. But that is besides the point. They still should not be having communion services.
