Bishop confirms National Catholic Reporter is not a 'Catholic' publication [CWN]

Yeah, no kidding. This is so understated it’s comical. Let’s see: If you constantly declared, in public, that your boss was authoritarian, power-hungry, and obsolete, and that the employees really have all the answers, not those in charge, would you expect the people in authority to “appreciate your slant on things?” lol.

This is a highly inflammatory publication. Every issue. Even within the rare issue which contains no high level of controversy (or extremist slant toward an otherwise factual/neutral event or topic), the Comments section is, in decency terms, X-rated. There is a great irony in all their blather about how supposedly only those not in ecceliastical authority have “charity,” and “know the Jesus of the Gospels.” while at the same time the commenters pour forth hateful words, fluently. And dare to oppose them, if another commenter: they will draw and quarter you in equally contemptuous terms.

The editorial staff, as well as the commenting contributors, have no use for hierarchy. They say that most frankly; there’s no subtlety or apology about it. They want a democratic church, and have in fact used those terms. They cannot stand the thought of other people defining moral doctrine. There is almost nothing in that publication which supports any recognizable Catholicism.

They support:
homosexual marriages
open homosexuals in the priesthood
the LGBT agenda (“out, proud and active”)
contraception
female ordination
heterodox interpretations of scripture, including The Real Presence
cohabitation

They denounce:
orthodoxy in general (that one they become apoplectic about)
traditional liturgies and devotional practices of any kind (rosaries, lighting candles, various prayer practices, whatever)
ecclesial authority in general
male authority in particular

It’s not a matter of preferences, in tha above two categories. No, this is a black and white world to them. You’re with them, or you are to be condemned to the guillotine. They’re activist revolutionaries, right out of the French Revolution.

This is also the publication that published an article by a outside writer that said that no plane crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11. Then in a follow up issue, after getting ridiculed for the article, said that they were not responsible for the content of outside reporters.

What a bunch of bunk. I then cancelled my subscription. That was 12+ years ago. Happy that I did. Regret that I hadn’t done it earlier.

Colorado bishop: National Catholic Reporter ‘is an embarrassment to the Catholic Church’

A Colorado bishop is supporting the local bishop in his call for the National Catholic Reporter to drop the name “Catholic.”

Bishop Michael Sheridan of Colorado Springs told LifeSiteNews.com in an interview this week that the national paper is “an embarrassment to the Catholic Church.”

The newspaper is often called the “National Catholic Fishwrap” by conservative Catholics because of its stances against Church teaching.

In January, Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City, where NCR’s offices are located, published a column reminding the paper and the faithful that NCR has been forbidden from using the name “Catholic” since 1968.

The Code of Canon Law stipulates in canon 216 that no organization can use the name Catholic without permission of the ecclesiastical authority.

NCR is renowned for opposing Catholic teaching on women’s ordination, contraception, homosexuality, and other issues, yet still enjoys privileged access to many Church leaders and regularly features ads paid for by Catholic dioceses and parishes.

“I believe exactly what [Bishop Finn is] saying,” said Sheridan. “That is a big deal for me…I don’t understand why some of these publications use the word Catholic when in some of their editorial stances they stand absolutely opposed to Church dogma.”

Even if the paper continues to defy the bishop, he continued, churches should “absolutely not” make it available to parishioners on their magazine racks.

In his January 25th column, Bishop Finn noted that NCR’s “positions against authentic Church teaching and leadership have not changed trajectory” since the original ruling in 1968 by Bishop Charles Helmsing.

“In light of the number of recent expressions of concern, I have a responsibility as the local bishop to instruct the Faithful about the problematic nature of this media source which bears the name ‘Catholic,’” he added.

Nevertheless, the paper has remained defiant. “NCR is proud to call itself a Catholic publication,” wrote Thomas Fox, the paper’s publisher, on January 27th. “We report and comment on church matters including official teachings. We also report and comment on those who call into question some of these official teachings.”

Fox also pointed out that NCR is a member of the Catholic Press Association, which is approved by the Catholic Church.

Could someone explain to me how the Natioal Catholic Reporter can hold membership in the Catholic Press Association? Radical and dissident expression is one thing , but this publication , by opposing church dogma so vehemently , seems to have lost any possible right to call itself " Catholic "

A more apt name would be National Anti-Catholic Reporter. Truthfully , these Bishops are not merely being doctrinaire , or reactionary , but rather they are simply warning the faithful against that which might be spiritually harmful , or even heretical. Isn’t that part of their job description?

Honestly, why John Allen and Michael Sean Winters are still there is news to me. Those two do not deserve to have their good names associated with the rest of that bunch. Could they not seek employment at a place that couod make better use of their God-given talents?

Perhaps the Reporter gives them the freedom to write articles about events as they see them unfolding whereas other journals, both liberal and conservative, might seek to impose more of an editorial bias.

Associating with and taking payment from a group known to attack the faith seems a tad problematic.

Associating with and taking payment from a group known to attack the faith seems a tad problematic.

This is always a difficult call. Jesus made it clear that disregard for the faith is not only a matter of proactive attack but also one of passivity in regards flesh and blood concerns of his Father’s children. Refraining from voicing a specific disagreement with what is perceived as the direction of the Church is not necessarily the same thing as faithfulness to the deposit of faith. Institutions and hierarchies expect loyalty. One can be seen as being faithful, even orthodox, simply by going with the flow and not asking questions. Over the years I’ve seen this within both liberal and conservative circles.

Perhaps it would be helpful if people listed the journals and periodicals that they see as offering no attack to the faith either proactively or passively.
