Bishop Dolan gave the eucharist to V.P. Biden

Relax, we both confessed.

We both got it wrong, then somehow got it right. That didn’t happen through following rules, it happened through grace and mercy, which God distributes as He chooses, not based on human limits. Those human limits suggest the best way for us that we can know, but do not by any means place limits on God who can choose to ignore them if He wishes.

Well, sometimes I still get it way wrong, but I digress. 😊
Praise God’s mercy then. I don’t do it enough. But don’t make light of sacriledge, please. I’m assuming you didn’t mean to, but that’s how it read.

I don’t know about the EF, but this is very saddening. Perhaps further evidence that indeed, the media preferred candidate for the papacy is not the candidate preferred by the Holy Spirit. Very sad because to date I have liked him very much indeed. I realize he wants to bring us together, but if true this crosses the line into disregard for the soul to curry political favor.
I think I went a bit too harsh in this… I maintain that I am saddened by this, I will leave it up to Holy Mother Church & God whom a good Papal candidate is. I still generally appreciate Cardinal Dolan, that said I find my self of opposing view when it comes to the question of letting politicians like the Vice President and House Minority Leader commune.

What you guys are saying is not what the Church teaches. It’s not wisdom; it’s error.

I am sorry for every time I received Our Lord unworthily, because it *offended Him *at His most vulnerable. I still have lots of penance I ought to be doing for it, even though it was years ago. Adding sin to sin buries a sinner deeper, it doesn’t lead him to grace.

Part of a sincere contrition is wishing we hadn’t done what we did, isn’t it?
Possibly when someone says they received IN a state of grave sin, they may mean that objectively looking back though more clear eyes there was grave matter involved in their lives, though they may have been confused about whether there was grave matter at the time, or may have even been deceiving themselves about whether they had freely consented to the sin.

I am sorry too. I never said I wasn’t sorry.

Yet here I stand, repeating every day the words of King David…

***Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, "Who am I, Lord GOD, and who are the members of my house, that you have brought me to this point? *(2 Samuel 7:18)

A mature Christian comes to a point where he has contrition for his sins, but his contrition is balanced with great joy at being forgiven. There is tension between the contrition and joy. Sometimes I kneel in adoration and cry for what I have done to Jesus, and then I cry because I can’t believe what he has done for me in spite of what I have done to him.

V.P. Biden makes the distinction, as many Catholics do wrongly, that Church teaching can’t be binding on non-Catholics through the civil law. This is not active dissent from the Church’s teaching, but stems from complications regarding the Church’s insistence on saying that people cannot be compelled to act against their conscience in religious matters, and cannot be hindered from practicing the dictates of their own religion. The inference many Catholics draw from this is that obliging non-Catholics to adhere to Church teaching on absolute prohibitions against abortion or keeping Catholic standards in terms of marriage law would be equivalent to imposition on their consciences.

It’s very easy for non-pastors to assume that they can make the determination about who & who is not in a position to receive communion or another sacrament and what disqualifies them. The critics are outraged because the cardinal has pleased them with his stand, for instance, against the health mandates. If the cardinal is satisfied that the publically-known communicant is not deliberately flouting Church teaching to the detriment of the Church, as Biden does not – he doesn’t say “Oh well those stupid old men will learn better one day” – then the critic should not concern themselves with something that is really none of their affair. And they might use the occasion to point out the actual Church teaching & help others who are in a similar position to better understanding.

Good post. I as well received the Eucharist for many years when in fact I should have spontaneously burst into flames for my sins ( a strange incense indeed!).
Which is not to excuse the sin or water down the Church’s teaching at all.
I like your statement about God’s patience. God does as He wills, with who he wills, when He wills it, according to His good pleasure.
Oh man, is that what I smelled? Phew!

Daily people receive the Eucharist not in a state of Grace. This is not something new.

It’s not the priest’s sin (or in this case, Cardinal).

But we don’t know the state of the VP’s soul. Maybe the VP went to confession before mass.

Hopefully. 🙂

Can you give me the link where he recanted his stance on gay so called marriage and abortion? 🙂

Thank you. He can’t because he didn’t. Hence, why he shouldn’t be receiving communion.

I will never understand why any Church leader would be okay with allowing sacrilege. I can’t imagine ANY reason why the sacrilege would be okay/somehow mitigated. All I have heard is that each Bishop can decide whether to follow Church law. But I have yet to hear a good reason not to do so when it comes to canon 915. I sure hope Pope Francis makes a statement about this…and soon. Otherwise, I really just don’t know what to think/believe anymore.

I doubt you’ll find that anywhere, though if it happens, there will be a lot of “prayers answered” threads.

What you have here is a thread about worrying about someone else’s assumed sin.

Dealing with my own sinfulness is enough, worrying about the sins of another, I surely can’t toss the stone.

keeping the Eucharist from someone, even a public sinner is keeping, him from God’s healing grace. It is my opinion that it is what “saves” all of us.
Perhaps someone else can chime in here, but I thought that Catholic teaching was that you do **not **receive graces from the Eucharist IF you are in a state of mortal sin…the whole receiving the Lord in an unworthy manner and being guilty of sinning against the Body and Blood of the Lord.

You are correct.

NO, that is not what is happening here. What is happening here are a bunch of good-willed Catholics who are VERY concerned that leaders of our Church are openly allowing sacrilege. It just doesn’t COMPUTE. How can this be? The fact that so many want to make this solely about Biden’s sins is so frustrating.

EDIT: And I don’t know about the others who feel the way I do, but this is seriously giving me a crisis of faith.

What you have here are people scandalized by the apparent public acceptance of sin. I am not saying that that is/was the intention of those distributing, but it looks that way. And perception in this day and age is everything.

Don’t have a crisis, amico mio. All of us, including the clergy at every level, are imperfect sinners.

Be disappointed, but stay with the Church that He founded.

Something about this goes beyond “disappointment” and I can’t verbalize why.

Wow, that’s kind of rude. Yes, it is what is happening.

Take a breath.

Nobody said the leadership of the Church isn’t concerned about it’s participants getting closer to God.

The rules of the Church are not changing because someone took communion outside of the state of Grace.

Every priest would be a fool to think that the hundreds of people who receive communion each week at their parish are all in a state of Grace.

It’s reality.

If you think this one situation is that crazy, you haven’t been to an Easter or Christmas Mass. Where the population grows exponentially for Mass. Many of those who never practice the faith otherwise.
