I stumbled upon this video of Bishop Sheen while looking for something totally unrelated. It is so good I wanted to share.

There are many videos of him, but I had not seen this particular one.

I pray he will be canonized soon. His weekly telecast was watched by Catholics and Protestants alike.

I posted it in the traditional sub forum, because Bishop Sheen is about as traditional as you can get.

@ 3:14…classic

Can we imagine something like this today?

It is amazing to think that there was a time not too long ago when a Catholic priest was not protrayed badly on tv, abc, non the less.

The first television show that I ever watched was Bishop Sheen’s “Life is Worth Living” in the fall of 1953.

I was 10 years old, a student in a Catholic Boarding School in Ukiah, California. I was a Protestant, but had already made the decision to be baptized as soon as possible.

Someone donated several Televisions to the school, and we had one in the Boy’s Dorm. We were allowed to watch very little TV, Disneyland and Bishop Sheen being two of the programs that were on the approved list.

I was struck by how human he was, and how approachable he seemed to be. I came from a VERY FUNDAMENTALIST Protestant denomination, where all you ever heard about was fearing God, and how you would be punished forever. It was the Dominican Nuns that rant that school, and clergy like Bishop Sheen that got me interested in the Catholic Church. (Ironically, my wife who is a “Cradle Catholic” was scared to death of him. She saw him as very intimidating.)

It was their example of the way they lived day to day that convinced me that this was the one true religion. Nobody tried to convince me with words (I doubt if they could have, my grandfather was a VERY powerful preacher). It was the joy in living, the way they conducted themselves, and how happy they all appeared to be that brought me to the Church.

I also hope that Bishop Sheen is canonized some day.

How I love Bishy Sheen. (Those of you familiar with his work know I’m not behaving in a derogatory way towards him.) He was on ABC? I always thought his show was on the Dumont network.

Sainthood now!

I would love to see an honest (non-biased) study done on how we came from a time like that to what we now live in. I mean it was not that long ago and the people who watched shows like that raised the people running society today. Its just sad and interesting at the same time.

I did enjoy the clip and would like to see Bishop Sheen declared a Saint!
