With all respect to Cardinal Arinze, this is a restriction placed on the EF that isn’t even considered for the OF.That’s pretty much what they did with Deacon John who now has been assigned to say the Gospel in Spanish at my local parish. It’s quite a struggle for him as it’s quite obvious he speaks and understands very little Spanish.
But didn’t Cardinal Arinze say in that video that the requirements were that the priest must know good Latin in order to use the 1962 liturgical books? Otherwise it’s the normative OF, with which most are familiar with and which bishops favor, even if the priests, deacons, and others don’t understand the vernacular of that particular congregation.
By the way, don’t they show you pictures in those German manuals?
We have a parish near me where the Spanish speaking priest takes his turn at the daily English morning Mass and reads every single word since he speaks virtually no English. At my own parish, whenever we have a substitute priest, the opposite occurs and they read every word for the Spanish Mass since they rarely send us a sub who speaks Spanish.
Is the Mass any less just because the priest isn’t fluent in that particular vernacular language?
