Here’s the latest salvo from Bp. Bumbleton attempting to destroy Catholicism all by himself. I wish they would have shown all the names of the signers.

Have something to say? I did. I don’t know if my letter will ever see print, but I think anyone with an opinion on this should send a letter to the editor. Two weeks ago, Cardinal Maida addressed all Catholics in the Archdiocese to vote yes on Proposal 2. This proposal is to have a constitutional amendment written to define marriage as between one man and one woman. This does not address civil unions or other legal opportunities unmarried couples of either sex can pursue. It you’d like to take a peek at Prop 2, you can find it at:

Does he never get tired of being disobedient to his superior? Why am I not surprised? Did he also send out letters to people called Catholic’s for Kerry? One of the teachers at school told me she got one. WHen I mentioned his name she thought it was the name on it but said she would bring it to school on Tuesday!
 
what diocese is Gumbleton bishop of? I’ve heard of him before, but for some reason, thought he was the chief Anglican bishop of the US.

He’s one of the Auxiliary Bishops for the wonderful Archdiocese of Detroit.

Sad sad sad. Father Justin Kelly, one of the signers of the letter, was one of my favorite professors in college. I’d love to see the names of all of the people who signed – I’m certain I’d know several others.

While we share our bishops’ desire to strengthen the institution of marriage, we do not believe that the proposed amendment would do this. It seems designed, rather, to exclude homosexual persons from the privileges and benefits associated with marriage

No KIDDING your Excellency!!!

That is EXACTLY what is trying to do, and EXACTLY why we, as Catholics, need to support it. They are NOT married, they can never be married, so why should anyone allow them to make a travesty of Christ’s Sacrament with their unholy parody of it???!

BTW, does anyone have a list of the clergy who signed this piece of moral relativistic trash?

Bishop Gumbleton has the honor and privilege of being the only active bishop in the United States that has not been either ordained in Pope John Paul II pontificate, or assigned as an Ordinary by Pope John Paul II

He was Ordained as an Auxiliary Bishop for Detroit back in 1968. And yes, he is still an auxiliary after close to 40 YEARS. No Pope has ever saw fit to grant him a diocese to pastor (thank GOD!), so we in Detroit are stuck with him, probably as a source of penitential suffering.
 
For those that don’t know, Proposition 2 in Michigan was a referendum to amend the constitution to define marriage as being between one man and one woman.

I voted ‘yes’ as did the voters in the eleven states who voted on similar measures. The voice of the people is plain on this issue.

Whether employers grant marriage-like benefits to same-sex couples, I am opposed to relativizing the definition of marriage in this way.

I think group marriage would have been the next item on the agenda, in the form of bigamy or polyandry. These forms of extended marriage are common in parts of the world, and there would certainly be no logical barrier to such forms unless the line was drawn somewhere.
 
Bishop Gumbleton’s 75th birthday is in late January 2005. While most bishops, even auxiliaries, today serve well past “retirement age,” I have a feeling he will be “Auxiliary Bishop emeritus” by February.

 I note that the Vatican graciously accepted the retirements of Archbishop Weakland (Milwaukee) and Bishop Sulllivan (Richmond) shortly after their 75th, and many months before a successor was even named. Others, like Archbishop Donohugh (sp?) in Atlanta, are still active even after reaching 76. 

 Not that it will matter. Perhaps "retirement" will allow Bishop Gumbleton to be even more of a loose cannon.
