Bishop Gumbleton's "Farewell" Address

Oh Sue…good to see that your still fairly Gumbleton-obsessed.

You spend a lot of time posting about him for someone who hasn’t stopped smiling since his resignation was accepted.
 
Well, I do read the newspaper, which posted the link. Does that make me obsessed, showing the hateful, inaccurate propaganda that he spews?

You know, if you want him, you can have him. I hear he’s looking for a parish…oh wait! Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation!
 
I reside in the Archdiocese of Detroit. While I respect Bishop Gumbleton earnestness and life’s experience, I cannot say that I agree with him in many ways. I see nothing wrong with a desire on the part of many of the faithful to have priests and bishops who are faithful to the magisterium of the church. “Rogue” philosophies are most likely better promulgated by unordained theologians NOT by the shepherds who are responsible for leading their flock to heaven via adherence to church teachings.

I’m looking for the hateful part in his remarks and having a hard time finding it. Care to clarify?

Sue and I are both in Detroit.

Is your point that the faithful should NOT be interested in lives of the bishops that have been assigned to their diocese.

Or that they should not inform others when major events happen in the lives of these bishops?

My point would be that people who are offering this information in a forum where all they will get is back-slapping and handshakes for pointing out what they perceive as a bad bishop shouldn’t be surprised when others question their motivation.

The man did good work for the poor…seems like that should be enough to me to laud him for his epsicopal ministry.

We ought to leave the judging of anyone’s motives to God, don’t you think?
The man did good work for the poor…seems like that should be enough to me to laud him for his epsicopal ministry.

It’s fine that he’s done much for the poor–that’s certainly important and laudatory. However, a bishop’s primary duty is to teach the truths of the Catholic faith to those under his episcopal care. If he isn’t doing so, he is a bad bishop even if he is a great human being.

Yes, I laud him for his ministry to the poor.

But it does not follow from that that his other ministries were also effective, if not actually damaging to souls.

His episcopal ministry involved much that lead sheep astray, rather than bringing them to the Way, the Truth and the Life.
 
i’m a native Detroiter. Bishop Gumbleton is a friend of some friends of mine. he helped my family out with an issue we had in the past.

however, i’m still unclear on what happened with him. is it his support of gay/lesbians? women’s roles in the church? (the article didn’t specify what exactly he thought these roles should be.)

please let me know…
 
I have a few questions…for all people familiar with Gumbleton.
  1. Has this man ever made public statements against Abortion?
2)Has he ever led a protest or even attended a protest outside of an abortion clinic.

Based on what I read Bp. Gumbleton was pretty anti-war. If so did he aknowledge the greatest war in the history of the humankind? The war that continues today? The war against the unborn is infinately greater, more evil, and significant than all of the other wars added together in human history.

SInce he is so anti war and into the human diginity there is no doubt that the war against the unborn had to be his primary focus as far as his social justice agenda went…RIGHT? RIGHT??? Anyone???anyone???
 
I pray that we get good men to be solid and orthodox Bishops, but I also don’t really like a “ding-dong the witch is dead” approach to when certain Bishops retire. Like them or not, they are A. children of God who are our brothers, and B. validly consecrated Successors to the Apostles. Their office deserves our respect, if they themselves not our admiration.

I agree with you to an extent…I am not familiar with Gubleton, but I assure you that Jesus Christ himself warned us of Wolves among us. Even dressed like sheep. I wonder sometimes if these Wolves even know they are Wolves. We are all sinners but we all know the Church holds the truth. Even bishops are subject to the authority of ROME. One soul lost due to any poor Episcopal leadership is a horrible thing. Some parts of the country have entire dioceses that do not resemble Catholicism. We can only reflect on the past and look to the future…knowing the past helps shape the future. I don’t question Gumbletons ordination/consecration. I do wonder about his leadership. Nuff said by me.

Oh good grief…bishops are not subject to the authority of Rome…we go over this again and again…

The authority of the Pope is there for unity…not to impose pastoral judgment in some sort of worldwide mega-diocese.

It’s widely known that he was a supporter of gay/lesbian relationships and promoted Dignity USA. This couldn’t have helped, either:

So you’re suggesting that he committed perjury in front of a legislative committee?

That’s an awfully heady accusation.
