however, i’m still unclear on what happened with him. is it his support of gay/lesbians? women’s roles in the church? (the article didn’t specify what exactly he thought these roles should be.)
Nothing really ‘happened’ to him.

The mandatory retirement age for bishops is 75. At that time, bishops are required, by Church law, to tender their esignations.

The Vatican accepted the resignation, which also includes a resignation from all assignments.

The Vatican could have allowed him to remain as pastoral administrator of St. Leo’s, but choose not too.

This, again, is not unusual, as not a single other auxilliary bishop in the world has been ‘allowed’ that in the last 40 years.

It seems, thought, that +Gumbleton, seems to have thought that he would have been granted an exception for some reason.

From my personal perspective, it really looks like he’s taking a normal event in a bishop’s life, and trying to make a media event out of it as some sort of ‘persecution’.

Most interesting. I’m betting the Free Press (or the New York Times, which also ran a feature article) won’t bother covering this side of the story.

I think there is always some question to be asked when a priest (or bishop) is willing to continue serving in ministry and is told not to.

I’ve seen this happen with priests who have hit 70 and had some disagreement with the bishop…Bishop Gumbleton had it happen to him…

I mean, there wasn’t a long line of potential pastors lining up to take over St. Leo’s (from what I can ascertain anyway)…

And in all honesty, the acceptance of resignations of bishops wasn’t very consistent under PJPII…some were accepted at 75…others stayed in office until 80. Indications are B16 wants to keep closer to the 75 year age limit regardless of a bishop’s “political” leanings…and that will be a good thing.

thanks. yeah i read some of this online. the “friend of the friend” of mine was circulating a petition of some sort, i think to show support and maybe somebody would change their mind and allow him to stay.

when i asked what happened to him, i was thinking more along the lines of, has he always supported gays, women priests, etc. it was less than 10 years ago that he helped my family out with something. i wouldn’t think that some family members of mine would have been quite so accepting of his help had they known some of this.

oh well.

I know that you know, that even though a priest might request placement in particulars parishes… it will be solely up to Maida to replace Gumbleton…
But seriously, what conservative or staunch-Catholic priest would be eager to step into the mess-that-is-Gumbleton.

Meanwhile, this mornings local papers, the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press
report that the “faithful” (read faithful to Gumbleton, not necessarily faithful to Church teaching) are saddened by his leaving:

while the diocese denies anything unusuall. His time has just come :

detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070128/LIFESTYLE04/701280319

and both papers carried a half page ad today sponsored by the “Urban Parish Coalition of The Detroit Catholic Pastoral Alliance” opposing the decision to remove him as pastor. It appears (in the “ghost” image on the ad of the names in alph order) that there are about 1500 members of this group…

Hey frommi, I did not see you listed… at least not under frommi;)

And you wouldn’t see my signature…personally I think 25 years is too long for any pastorate to go on…communities need the renewal and spark that comes with the message of a new leader.
