Bishop in Minnesota suffers from celiac disease

It is a little known fact that the bishop of the Duluth diocese in Minnesota, Bishop Dennis M. Schnurr, who is also my bishop. Is afflicted by the same gluten intolerance as the young girl in New Jersey, though perhaps not to the same level of severity.

I just found this out today from a deacon at my parish while we were discussing an article about a lady in Little Canada MN who also suffers from the disease in the St. Paul/Minneapolis archdiocese newspaper The Catholic Spirit.

Very interesting. Wouldn’t it have been illuminating if the secular press had interviewed that bishop and possibly some other clergy who suffer from celiac disease in all their stories about the New Jersey girl?

Since I have a sibling who suffers from a chronic & incurable disease (not celiac), I can understand that Catholic celiacs have an especially difficult cross to bear. However, what I cannot understand is second-guessing Jesus Christ and what He meant when he instituted the sacrament. To say that He wouldn’t have gotten hung up on a “technicality” is to say that we know His mind. How can any of us know the mind of God?

Jordan Rubin has Crohn’s disease, not celiac disease. Celiac disease is genetic and the only cure is a gluten free diet. SBOs may be beneficial for other digestive conditions, but will not help anyone with CD to be able to digest gluten properly.
