Bishop Paprocki bars pro-abortion Illinois lawmakers from Holy Communion

Springfield, Ill., Jun 6, 2019 / 04:05 am ([CNA](https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/)).- The Bishop of Springfield, Illinois, has decreed that state legislative leaders may not be admitted to Holy Communion within his diocese, because of their work to pass the state Reproductive Health Act. The bishop also directed the Catholic legislators who have voted legislation promoting abortion should not present themselves to recieve Holy Communiion until they have first gone to confession.
“In accord with canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law…Illinois Senate President John Cullerton and Speaker of the House Michael J. Madigan, who facilitated the passage of the Act Concerning Abortion of 2017 (House Bill 40) as well as the Reproductive Health Act of 2019 (Senate Bill 25), are not to be admitted to Holy Communion in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois because they have obstinately persisted in promoting the abominable crime and very grave sin of abortion as evidenced by the influence they exerted in their leadership roles and their repeated votes and obdurate public support for abortion rights over an extended period of time,” Bishop Thomas Paprocki wrote in a June 2 decree.

“These persons may be readmitted to Holy Communion only after they have truly repented these grave sins and furthermore have made suitable reparation for damages and scandal, or at least have seriously promised to do so, as determined in my judgment or in the judgment of their diocesan bishop in consultation with me or my successor,” the bishop added.

“The State” is not going to stand for this. The Church stands in opposition to the ways of the world, as it should.
In my opinion, this is the beginning of a long battle in which the Church will bear the cross more explicitly.
 
It’s a pretty extreme law.
Among the provisions that the bill would remove are regulations for abortion clinics, required waiting periods to obtain an abortion, and a ban on partial-birth abortion. In addition, it would lift criminal penalties for performing abortions and would prevent any further state regulation of abortion.

The legislation would require all private health insurance plans to cover elective abortions, and eliminate reporting requirements as well as regulations requiring the investigation of maternal deaths due to abortion.

Were partial birth abortions already banned? I can see someone voting to ban them.

It’s hard to tell. I don’t know if anyone has seen the full text of the legislation. They moved it through in a hurry just before the end of the legislative session via amendments to other legislation to get this in through the back door without needing to actually have discussions or let people know what’s going on.
 
Canon 915 of the Church’s 1983 Code of Canon Law already bars politicians who supports positions contrary to Church doctrine from communion His Grace Bishop Paprocki is a Canon Lawyer so he is merely applying the Church’s laws as is.
 
Too bad he didn’t go far enough.

We the people elect representatives and politicians. We the people vote. There are a whole lot of people who fall under the same responsibility who do not hold office. Of course if he said that, the Church would be kicked out of America.
 
This surprises me because he made a statement to his diocese that it was okay to sit out the 2016 election.
 
This is not the first time he has taken this stance so this is not a surprise.

Glad he is taking this stance once again.

Personally, I await the day when a Bishop says that ANYONE in a profession which disregards the sanctity of ANY human life is not to present themselves for Holy Communion.

I especially look forward to the first Bishop/Priest to say this regarding a cop who shoots and kills an unarmed Black man…after all “conception until natural death” means Conception. Until. Natural. Death.
 
Ummm, you can confess any sin, even murder and be absolved. He is targeting people who persist in publically defying Church teachings.

Kind of different than someone who sins and seeks absolution. if someone persisted in defending people who murdered adults, I could sort of see your point, but who does that?
 
The “Thin Blue Line of Silence” folk…they are accessories to their compadres’ sins in two ways which the Church defines as such:
  1. By praise/flattery (“that thug had it coming”)
  2. By silence (the Code of Silence which many good cops have been fired for breaking).
 
But why specifically “unarmed Black men” and not another race or gender? Do you seriously think all police officers are complicit in the behavior of over reacting or even less often specifically setting out to harm? If so, are all OB/GYNs complicit in the abortions performed by some Doctors? Do you extend that complicity to other specialties in medicine, to nurses, to pathologists, lab workers, etc? What about members of the armed forces? Or how about lawyers and judges?

That is a very different problem in society than abortion. With politicians and abortion providers specifically, there is very clear intent to go against church teachings. They
publically and vocally push an agenda that contradicts the Church. Cases of police killing in cold blood are a handful a year at most. How many abortions are performed daily? How much good versus bad is there in police work? How much good at all comes from abortion?
