I’d be freaking out if we got Barron lol

Sadly we didnt… but that’s okay

A good bishop should be intimately involved in parish life
Given the sizes of the parishes in the Archdiocese here (3000, 5000, 8000, and that’s just the people who register - likely there are even more unregistered folks who are somehow involved with the parish or coming to Mass) - coupled with the large number of parishes, this would be an impossible task for a Bishop to be doing this on top of all of this administrative duties, even though there are several assistant bishops. My guess is that the Eparchy of Parma is not dealing with as many people under one bishop.

Edited to add, Wiki says as of 2009 the Eparchy of Parma had approximately 9000 Catholics spread over 36 parishes. We have about 9000 Catholics at just one parish about 5 miles away from here, and over 250 parishes in the Archdiocese.

My job is in Long Island, which is in the diocese of Rockville Center. I don’t know much about the bishops and such; although the church I go to during the week is very very nice.

I’ll see if I can find out info on him.

Fun fact: The actor who voiced Mr. Magoo was Jim Backus, who also played Thurstan Howell III on “Gilligan’s Island”.

Here’s a fun fact: Bishop Nelson Perez who took over the Cleveland diocese in 2017 seems to be from Rockville Centre too. I noticed because I went on the Cleveland diocese website for something else and he had a big post up raving about how happy he was that Bishop Brennan got named to head Columbus diocese near him. (I also noticed that Bishop Perez used to be pastor of the church I now attend most often in Philadelphia area, but left a couple years before I started actively practicing again. It seems like certain churches and dioceses are “feeders” for bishops because people think the pastor at this church now is going “up the ladder” too.)

There was a time where it seemed like every new U.S. bishop being appointed was from Pittsburgh. It’s funny how that works. It’s been awhile since any priest from my diocese has been named a bishop. There are none living.

Philadelphia seems to crank out a lot of bishops lately. Given the huge number of Catholics here and the size of the seminary, I’m not surprised.

@Joe_5859 @Tis_Bearself

I wonder if diocese plays a role at all in the reasoning of the Vatican - certainly, the character of the man is the main factor, but I wonder if there’s a balance of place of origin that is aimed at being kept…

It’s hard to say. I have seen many cases over the years where it seems they try to keep bishops in the same general region as their place of origin. But then there are plenty of exceptions to that. It makes me think that it is at least in the mix of considerations, even while not being the most important factor.

But if he were the ordinary of a larger diocese, he’d probably have to stop his Word on Fire ministry. I don’t think anyone would have the time to do both and serving as shepherd to his diocese would take precedence.

That’s a good point. Although, I know Word on Fire has it’s own staff, I imagine that he wouldn’t be able to be as involved if he had a diocese all his own.

I don’t know… JP2 had a diocese to himself and was still able to write tons… St. Bonaventure was head of the Franciscans and had other administrative positions and still was one of the foremost Scholastics along with Aquinas…

For Bonaventure, I don’t think we should compare a contemporary ordinary’s amount of work with the amount of work of a medieval ordinary.

Back then there were fewer people and administration as a science didn’t even exist. Notice how the majority of famous medieval philososphers, theologians and scientists were also bishops.

Fair enough… then I reiterate JP2 and raise you a Ratzinger as well 😃
