What does Bishop Schneider say in his new book(Christus Vincit) about the sspx?

Haven’t gotten that far in the book yet but I’m very curious as well…

He had a lot of good to say. He mentioned that some Catholics might be surprised to find that the seminaries and churches he visited had Pope Francis’ picture displayed and prayed for him. . .same as in any other Catholic church/seminary.

Oh great! I can’t wait to read further. I was interested in his response because there is a sspx church walking distance from my house. I went once and they had pictures of the pope as well as prayed for him during the Mass. I haven’t gone back since though because I didn’t know if it is ok to or not…

Well, they do have the right to hear confessions, still, and AFAIK their Masses are still valid Masses.

Bishop Schneider spoke however of them being ‘regularized’ as opposed to ‘coming back to full communion’ because they are already in communion’. He also said that some (not all but some) of the members do speak disparagingly of the OF and that this should definitely cease. He also said that he thought that it was possible that the SSPX could offer great gifts to the Church but that it would be necessary for them also to recognize the valid points in Vatican 2 --and while the bishop found some problems with Vatican 2 with regard to certain ambiguities in documents (nothing to invalidate anything dogmatic) he also found a lot of great worth, and he also stated that any of the problems in the documents could be overcome the way that those things always are, with careful footnoting and rewording more clearly where things were not so clear.

Confessions, yes, but one, I was answering it mostly in regards to their Masses, and two, canonical irregularity doesn’t deal with the validity of their Masses. They’re certainly valid, and I wouldn’t say otherwise. I’d like them to be regularized, but right now, they’re not.

Yes, just like Lutherans having a crucifix above their altar does not mean they have valid apostolic succession, eucharist or doctrine.

I was told by my previous priest they had valid but illicit Masses. I want under the impression that they were anything like complete breakoffs or heretics… but idk I haven’t investigated very thoroughly

It is one thing to describe the goodness and sincerity and “Communion” of the individuals, another thing to evaluate the organization response.

If I could interview the bishop, I would ask:
“Granted there are good individuals in both SSPX and FSSP, how would you compare the prudence of supporting one, compared to the other? Which would be better to support, in terms of long term impact on families, and the local Church?”

If he sheds light on this, in his new book or elsewhere, feel free to share.
