Bishop Sheen had a perception of private Catholic school so what is yours ?

Johnny Carson on his late night show once said that people don’t remember all the good things you did, just that one bad thing, and they never forget that one thing.

I think that we mustn’t forget just what un-beautiful condition our schools are in today before we think about criticising those teachers in the past. Are we going up or down in our school system today? Dope and new age thought has polluted our society from what it was in yesteryear. And schools are part and partial of our society and reflect it.

Someone once said that movies reflect the times in which we live. Back in the 50’s it was “Father knows best” with a whole adjusted beautiful warm family. And now it is “Stepdad knows nothing” with a diviate son, a out-of-control stepdaughter, a pervert neighbor, and an untrainable mut. That is what we are today. What can we expect our schools to be like?

Or in the words of Popeye the Sailor Man, “I am what I am”.

The quote is a fabrication, i.e. a lie. I’ve seen it repeated on web forums many times, but NEVER has anybody been able to produce a valid source (I’ve looked too). It’s similar to the alleged Luther quote that has him saying that the Christian is a “dung heap coated with pure white snow.” A myth that took on it’s own life.

The moral of the story is that imperfect as catholic schools are, they sure are better than being taught the faith by parents willing to grab whatever anecdote fits their biases rather than doing the homework necessary to tell the truth.

Honestly think about it for a second. What bishop does NOT have catholic schools in his diocese. No bishop is going to toss such a blanket condemnation of those who work under his direction out there. It would be gross uncharity and you should be ashamed of yourself for accusing Sheen of it.

I think somebody (not necessarily here) made up the quote to bolster their bias. Sadly, it happens.

If memory serves, Fr. Corapi might have said something similar to the OP’s quote at one point. I’m not surprised that THAT one doesn’t get tossed around much anymore.

I realise this thread is old, but I came across this site through a search engine query for the quote the original poster supplied.

It was interesting reading through the various posts.

As a Catholic teacher myself, I can say it is quite refreshing to hear of schools that seem to be Catholic and can call themselves that.

The Catholic school board I teach for is quite large, operates half a dozen secondary schools and several dozen elementary. However, I can state quite clearly with my 13+ years experience that the number of actual Catholic teachers (those that believe in Catholic doctrine and teach Catholic doctrine) are very very few and far between. We would be “lucky” to have one per school.

Modernism is the norm and I can clearly attest that when students graduate from Grade 12 they do not even know what the 10 Commandments are, let alone what they mean. None of the students (it would be far less than 1% ever attend Mass outside of those few held each year in the schools).

As much as that reported ArchBishop Sheen quote may seem to be hokey to many, when I heard it I stopped to think about it (for a few seconds) and realized how true it was.

The few orthodox Catholic teachers in the system that I know home school their children or send them to public schools. I do the latter.

If you are blessed enough to be near a truly Catholic school, then support it in whatever ways you can - even by volunteering one morning a month to go into the primary grades and help listen to students read or donate some funding, etc. Just ask the administration what you can do to help and I know they would be happy to have your help. Teachers feel burdened as it is and any little bit of difference helps. If you can’t donate time or money, maybe some quality reading materials or anything else that could help (i.e. an extra Crucifix donated for a student from a struggling (financial, social, etc) family to take home to hang above his or her bed or in the dining room).

I would be interested in finding evidence of where that ArchBishop Fulton Sheen quote is from, though, and recorded.

Regardless, as a Catholic teacher in Canada, I can very sadly assure you it is accurate.

I went to parochial school, with Sisters as teachers. I believe they couldn’t do any other work so they “taught” school, and mostly beat the living tar out of us for minor things. Really shaped me though, in that I became a rebel agains authority. My kids now go to parochial school, all lay teachers, and get a radically better education than the public schools.

This thread has been dormant for a considerable period. With rare exceptions, reviving threads after a protracted period of inactivity is discouraged because:

• the issues that spurred them are often no longer “hot” or current topics, explaining why thread activity ceased originally.
• posters originally involved in the discussion are sometimes no longer active on the forum and, therefore, unavailable to reply to comments added to the thread.

Our experience suggests that, when a topic merits revival, it is best accomplished by initiating a new thread that draws on recent events and can be posted to contemporaneously. This eliminates the baggage of folks being frustrated by asking and not receiving responses to issues raised in early posts (because the new poster didn’t notice that the post he was responding to was made a long time ago).

Posters are very welcome to open a new thread on the subject or any other topic, as well as to actively participate in the myriad active threads in the fora.
