Of course, says the Anglican heretic, there is another possibility:

Let each part of the Church–at the very least, each linguistic unit (i.e., English-speaking Catholics, etc.) develop its own liturgy, and then you won’t have to wrestle with these thorny issues.

I know that this will be met with howls of outrage, but try giving a theological rather than a pragmatic response, if possible.

OUTRAGE!!! 😉

Okay, now for my theological response.
  1. There would still need to be some sort of doctrinal oversight. We have enough liturgical abuse in the Church already (e.g. priests changing the wording to the point where it is no longer valid, such as “Creator, Redeemer, Sanctifier” to refer to the Holy Trinity)
  2. You are assuming the English-speaking countries would all agree on something together. 😛
Personally, I would prefer we all switch to Latin for common prayers and the prayers of Consecration.

Are you suggesting that there be more rites in the Church. I.E., In addition to the Eastern Rites (Maronite, Byzantine, etc, and of course the Roman Rite, that there be *more *Rites, i.e. American, Mexican, English, French, Spanish, etc. etc.? Ugh!!! That would be a headache!

While there is nothing that I can think of theologically that would prevent this, I see a big problem when it comes to the practicality of this.
