Holocaust-Denying Bishop Has Angry Confrontation With Argentine Reporter

ROME (AP) - A Catholic news agency says that a British bishop who had denied the Holocaust has apologized for his remarks.
Bishop Richard Williamson was shown in a Swedish state TV interview saying historical evidence indicates there were no Nazi gas chambers and that a maximum of 300,000 people died in concentration camps in the Holocaust.

The remarks caused widespread outrage.

Pope Benedict XVI had lifted a 20-year-old excommunication decree imposed on Williamson and three other bishops who had been consecrated without Vatican approval.

The Zenit Catholic news agency said Thursday that Williamson expressed regret for the statements.

It quoted him as saying that to all who took offense, “before God I apologize.”

And did he recant? He apologized to the Holy Father for the turmoil he caused, too. But not for the content of his comments.

I don’t know what he did…He said he was sorry…I am not his spokes person…

eport: Bishop who had denied Holocaust apologizes

By ALESSANDRA RIZZO – 20 minutes ago

ROME (AP) — A British bishop whose denial of the Holocaust embroiled Pope Benedict XVI in controversy has apologized for his remarks, a Catholic news agency said Thursday.

Bishop Richard Williamson, with the conservative Society of St. Pius X, had faced worldwide criticism over a television interview in which he said no Jews were gassed during the Holocaust.

Last month, the pope sought to help heal a rift with ultra-traditionalists by lifting a 20-year-old excommunication decree imposed on Williamson and three other bishops who had been consecrated without Vatican approval.

The move immediately caused an uproar among Jewish groups. Benedict later condemned Williamson’s remarks and spoke out against anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial.

“Observing these consequences I can truthfully say that I regret having made such remarks,” Williamson was quoted as saying in a statement carried by the Zenit Catholic news agency.

“If I had known beforehand the full harm and hurt to which they would give rise, especially to the church, but also to survivors and relatives of victims of injustice under the Third Reich, I would not have made them,” Williamson added, according to Zenit.

The agency quoted him as saying that to all that took offense, “before God I apologize.”

In the interview shown on Swedish state TV, Williamson said historical evidence indicates there were no Nazi gas chambers and that a maximum of 300,000 people died in concentration camps in the Holocaust.

Most historians believe about 6 million Jews died at the hands of the Nazis during the Holocaust.

Zenit said on its Web site that the statement was published upon Williamson’s return to London on Wednesday. The bishop was expelled from Argentina, where he had been based, following the controversy.

I forgive him I don’t care carwe what other people do
But you’ve just said that you don’t know what he did.

(Which is a bit economical with the exactitudes since you’ve appeared on other Bishop Williamson threads.)

I don’t know what he said I only know what I read…I don’t know if he recanted anything

He has caused great damage to my church and to the pope…I was angry for all of the things he said but I am a Christian I must forgive if I want to be forgiven

Let me start by saying that what he said is historically idiodic and totally without reason. He should not appologise until he accepts that he is wrong and understands why it matters.

Anyway, I do not fully understand why so much is being made of it. He was not excommunicated for these statements, or others like them. He is not representing Church teachings or speaking for the Church. Just because he is a Bishop does not mean that he cannot be an idiot.

I think he has been given entirely too much attention …I would never have put him on TV to begin with

I have read he is also anti woman…I actually pity him for his poverty of spirit, but we are all works in progress, and he has made a first step in the right direction

It might not seem like much to some, but I suspect for him it was a giant leap to have to acknowledge his damage to others

I’ve never come across a denier who cared in the slightest about who he upset, it doesn’t go with the territory.

I don’t know…I can’t judge him as far as sincerity…Some of the greatest Christians had murky pasts to over come…St Paul is one

He has asked for forgiveness and I will forgive because I am commanded to…It doesn’t mean I want to spend an afternoon with him

I think I may have erred more than a little - such comments are carefully engineered to upset one group of people.

Williamson knew exactly what he was doing.
I agree and that is why I have an issue with his mea culpa. I have no reason to think that his opinion has changed or that he understands why it is offensive.

I think he did not expect it to bite him in the bottom like it did.

The thing is . . . .

I’ve spent a decade and a half involved with internet discussions of one form or another - including the old wild unmoderated/semi-moderated era - and have come across a fair number of deniers over and above the odd fascist one comes across living in Europe.

Apart from a few ‘genuinely not very well’ characters (if you get my drift), I’ve never come across one who didn’t start off as a Jew-hater and acquire ‘denial’ as a kind of additional ‘weapon’.

That’s why I can’t agree that he doesn’t understand why it is offensive, unless he’s genuinely ‘not very well’, of course.

I understand. Perhaps it would be better if I said that he should comprehend the actual effect it had on the world and accepted that people with his mentality did it.

In the end, I have learned that an anti-semite almost never changes. I cannot say why. Perhaps it is a curse placed on them by a Jew Woman…

I honestly don’t think he is all there from the things I have read about him…I also read he is in danger of being thrown out of SSPX for his views…I have never come across a religious person like him in my life…He certainly lacks judgment…to go on to a TV station and make those claims when his society was trying to reconcile with Rome is something only a nut case would do in my opinion

I think he lives in his own bubble

This is what I would like to see the Bishop say:

I am sorry for my remarks. Clearly many millions of people were killed by the Nazi’s and my remarks just as clearly hurt those who survived the Nazi’s as well as their families. Even more important I recant my previously stated views and am very sorry for the aid and comfort I gave to those who deny the reality of the Holocaust.

I doubt I will see it, but that is what I would call a true apology.
