When I went to mass at assention thursday I was able to ask one of the priests who was actually a former bishop, but what my question is, is he asked to hear it outside with people around. I was like are you sure this is allowed and he said no one is going to hear. We ended up doing it inside, when the former bishop said that I was kind taken back little. Anyways is this sort of thing really allowed?

Are you talking about confession?
Confessions should be heard in a confessional, if possible, but it is not necessary.
Pope Francis, a couple weeks ago, I believe, heard confessions in St. Peter’s Square.
 
No such thing as a “former bishop.” Perhaps he is a retired bishop, bishop emeritus.
 
What I was trying to say is, the priest wanted to hear a confession outside with people around I was wondering If that is even allowed.
 
Yes, location is not important. Semi-privacy is ideal. Having a priest is vital.
 
Why would you think a retired Bishop doesn’t know how to do confession? :confused:
 
As long as you speak quietly and out of ear shot its definitely allowed. That being said, if it makes you uncomfortable you certainly have the right to go to confession at the scheduled time in the confessional booth / reconciliation room.
As another poster noted there’s no such thing as a former bishop. He’s still a bishop. He may be retired from active ministry - but he remains a high priest of the Lord forever.
