Hi

Just one question to the orthodox and maybe Eastern Catholics in this forum.

Why is it so important that Bishops wear beard? Not that I have anything against beards, I wear one myself, but I see is something “important”

Thanks for your answers

Tradition!

There are several reasons.

Many Orthodox laymen wear beards as well. I believe in Greece, state law requires beards of Priests and Deacons.

The usual answer is, “God knows what a grown man’s face is supposed to look like. Why frustrate His plans for your face?”

But Bishops are (in theory) chosen from among the monks, and Orthodox monks are bearded.

The presence of beards is a ecclesiastical tradition in Russian Orthodox church. The habit of Orthodox priests to carry beards is brought out in Old Testament tradition. In Holy Bible it is written concerning this, “and Lord God said to Moises - tell the priests, the sons of Aron, and say to them, … they must not shave their heads or cut the borders of their beards.” (Lev 21:1,5). It is forbidden not only to shave but to trim the beard.
