What kinds of duties and responsibilities does the bishop of a diocese have. When I was younger, I just assumed he celebrated mass all day in the cathedral, but then I learned this was more the responsibility of the Cathedral Rector/Pastor of the Cathedral Parish.

I’m just curious what kinds of things he does on daily basis (masses elsewhere in the diocese, visiting/supervising charities, etc?), not accusing him of doing nothing 😛 - I read the first chapter of Les Miserables, and boy was that bishop busy!

No, he sits behind his desk all day with a telephone on the desk waiting for complaints from the faithful about Mass abuses. Oh no, there’s one too many EMHCs, CALL THE BISHOP!

:D:D:D:D

Seriously, he runs the diocese. Think of the entire diocese as a company and he’s the CEO. This section of Canon Law will give you some insight on what a Bishop does: vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/__P1E.HTM

Along with the Bishop’s daily schedule there are parishes to go to for Confirmations. He was just here two weeks ago for the formal installation of my new Pastor. He had to drive about 6 hours to get here. Every new pastor needs to be formally installed. There is a lot of traveling that takes place outside of their normal daily schedule.

Running a diocese is not much different than running a mid-sized corporation. Large staff, branch offices, income and expenses…

As a successor to the Apostles, the Bishop has enormous trust placed in him by Him who called him to the Episcopal Office. His field of responsibility and accountability is awesome.

God bless His Church.
