I’ve heard it said that some bishops “have title” and others do not. I understand that bishops have title in the sense of a see, and that an auxiliary bishop would typically not have title while a “regular” Bishop would. But I have even heard where a “regular” Bishop lacks title, and thus is somehow less empowered than another Bishop who “has title”. Can anyone clear this up? Thanks very much, Mark

Mark,

I’m not really sure what you’re asking.

Even auxiliary bishops have a see (ok… a “titular see”).

What do you mean by “having title”?

What part of the world are you located?

That’s not a phrase we use in the United States, but might be elsewhere.

Are you referring to some Bishops being called Monsignor?

The title of archbishop can be given to a non-residential bishop. A metropolitan is a residential archbishop.

There are also residential Archbishops who are not Metropolitans. The Archbishop of Winnipeg comes to mind. (The Archeparch of Winnipeg for the Ukrainians is, however, a Metropolitan).
