As I said, Gerald Ford and Betty Ford were big supporters of Planned Parenthood. As for Nixon, he made some noise after Roe v. Wade, but did nothing to slow the opening of the abortion floodgates; indeed, his administration quickly put new rules into effect that facility abortion on demand. Nixon here, as in many other ways, was liberal, and his views represented those of California. After all, he put the Minesoata Twins on the Supreme Court. Nancy Reagan and her brood were of course pro-choice. Reagan himself started out that way but he seems to have regarded Roe. V. Wade as a bridge too far. The same effect it had on Judge Noonan, btw. Birth control yes, abortion no. When he came to power he and Judge Clark and others were pro-life and they brought the prochoicers into line by arranging a deal with the Pro-life Party not to run a Third Party candidate in 1984. Even this got fudged, however. Scalia was nominated to the Supreme Court, but a stealth pro-choice woman was also. Then, of course, we get the Bork disaster, and Kennedy, a hedger.I thought the Republicans were until '72.![]()
But as mixed as the Republican record has been, it is nothing like that of the Democrats, which is unequivocally pro-choice. The President is in fact an extremest on the issue.
