Washington, DC – A pro-life spokesman for the nation’s Catholic bishops doesn’t mince words today an interview about the new Harry Reid health care bill in the Senate that contains massive abortion funding.

And how many of those Senators are Catholic with bishops who have tolerated their pro-abortion stances and committed sacrilege by allowing them to continue to receive the Eucharist?

The USCCB also put out a video with Bishop Murphy endorsing “universal health coverage” as long as the Stupak amendment was active. If the USCCB had any concept of the political games played with abortion over the last four decades, they’d understand that the Stupak amendment had no real protection against abortion, only rhetoric.

The bishops have been the enablers.

2/3 of them have let political wheeling and dealing for social justice override their one and only responsibility, which is to teach the truths of the Church to everyone. They have failed to keep the Faith alive here in the US. And suddenly they are awakened by a harsh reality. We now live in a Godless, secular society and no amount of their preaching is going to make a dent in the fiasco they have let happen. We have too few leaders and clergy of the Catholic Church in existence today and even fewer who hold to the teachings of the Church.

Did anyone see the bulletin insert from the USCCB this weekend?

Basically it said they supported the language of the Stupak Amendment.

If you’ve read the Stupak Amendment, you should have noticed that the amendment allows for taxpayer funding of abortions in the exceptions of rape, incest, and to protect the life of the mother.

The USCCB supports an amendment which allows for the exceptions.

They’ve sold their souls for a bill which fosters a disordered view of social justice.

Possenti, I think you need to contemplate the reality of politics. Is it better to support an amendment that gets most of what you want, or to support an amendment that doesn’t exist with the end result being abortion is allowed in all circumstances?

This is the conundrum that pro-life politicians face every day.

It is better to outlaw abortion on demand than not, isn’t it?

The bishops are not politicians. They are called to teach the faith, not compromise. They supported the bill when it included the Stupak language, but they should have been calling for a fully pro-life amendment instead. They aren’t elected officials, they are servants of God and the Church.

On the topic of compromise, Republicans are always the ones compromising. It’s called “losing” but by a different name. The bill is a massive imposition of socialism on the American people, huge tax increase both for income and on medical supplies, rations care, lets government control nearly every aspect of our lives, yet we call it a compromise that we managed to prevent only some abortions from being paid for by taxpayers? That’s not a compromise. What do Republicans get out of the bill? Nothing. Even with the Stupak amendment, it still furthers the “right to abortion” by making taxpayers pick up the tab for the three exceptions.

You need to stop looking at the political scene as Democrat vs. Republican and start looking it as the Government vs. Freedom. The Government cannot grant freedom, God does. Government necessarily is a removal of freedom in that it places some humans to decide the fate of other humans, to determine how much control they wish to impose over other humans.

The Republican party has been more oriented toward freedom than the Democrat party, but that isn’t a high standard.

You must remember the Republican party is still prone to violating the God-given right to freedom for the sake of their own political power.

Hey, you sound like someone I know… Oh yeah.

Great points. You are right. Anyway you go about it, this bill is a pro-death and anti-freedom bill. It needs to be opposed from every angle.

Amen, bruthaman

As a non American I’m surprised that anyone is surprised. The Republicans are your Conservative party. The Democrats your socialisy leftist party. The socialist leftists are in power and want to fund abortion as they do in most of Europe. Surprise surprise. Most nominally catholic menbers of that party are as catholic as I am Hindu and ignore the Church. Again Quelle Surprise…they are not catholics so where is the surprise?

The surprise (or outrage) is in the bishops support of the leftists and their agenda.

You need to read what scripture and Holy Tradition teaches about the legitimate role of the government. Your worship of worldly “freedom” is idolatrous and derived from the Deist and liberal Protestant theology of the 17th and 18th centuries, not from Catholic tradition. Try reading some Augustine and Aquinas instead of Drudge. Joe

You have got to be kidding me.

Freedom existed since the dawn of time. It is sinful for one man to have ownership of another, to dictate every aspect of the lives of others. It is not a “worship of worldly freedom” it is the state for which God created Man.

If you are going to say things like "You need to read what…"blah blah blah, at least give me some references.

I’ll start by giving yuo some references first. You could read the Catechism of the Catholic Church - Participation in social life 1897. I’ll leave you with a couple of snippets:

1898 Every human community needs an authority to govern it. The foundation of such authority lies in human nature. It is necessary for the unity of the state. Its role is to ensure as far as possible the common good of society.

1899 The authority required by the moral order derives from God: “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore he who resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.”

1900 The duty of obedience requires all to give due honor to authority and to treat those who are charged to exercise it with respect, and, insofar as it is deserved, with gratitude and good-will. Pope St. Clement of Rome provides the Church’s most ancient prayer for political authorities:

“Grant to them, Lord, health, peace, concord, and stability, so that they may exercise without offense the sovereignty that you have given them. Master, heavenly King of the ages, you give glory, honor, and power over the things of earth to the sons of men. Direct, Lord, their counsel, following what is pleasing and acceptable in your sight, so that by exercising with devotion and in peace and gentleness the power that you have given to them, they may find favor with you.”

1901 If authority belongs to the order established by God, “the choice of the political regime and the appointment of rulers are left to the** free decision of the citizens**.”

The diversity of political regimes is morally acceptable, provided they serve the legitimate good of the communities that adopt them. Regimes whose nature is contrary to the natural law, to the public order, and to the fundamental rights of persons cannot achieve the common good of the nations on which they have been imposed.

Bolding is mine.

I do not argue for anarchy, but for small government (read about the Church’s teaching on subsidiarity). Neither the Democrats, nor the Republicans, have fought to limit the size and scope of government. Rather they have both been guilty of expanding the needless control of government in our everyday lives.

Finally, our nation wants a free market system in terms of things like health care. The government refuses to listen. They lie and say that it will save money and drive down the cost, but it is illogical and mathematically impossible. They are liars. The bills they propose have nothing to do with reform and have everything to do with control. The respect to the common good doesn’t even enter into their minds.

And with respect to Holy Scripture, I seem to recall that God freed the Jews from slavery and oppression. I believe his servant’s name was Moses.
